My H&R 357
« on: December 07, 2011, 03:31:25 AM »
I went by my local gun shop and was browsing the racks and saw a H&R Handi in 357 magnum.  It was price at 199 with box.  I asked my friend if it was new or used.  He said it was brought for a person spouse and she did not like it so he traded it never shot.  I asked if the price was firm.  He said you can have it for 185.00.  Yes I now have my first H&R Handi rifle although I would prefer a larger caliber I am sure that its capable of harvesting deer here in Indiana.  I will post a picture tonight

You can always sell your barrel and buy a barrel in the caliber that you want here on the classifieds, if your not happy with the .357.

Congrats on getting the Handi, and good luck on your hunting.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

Ream it to Maximum.  You can still shoot .38s and mags.  If you don't reload, you can buy your Maxis for deer on line from Reeds and others.  Ask Dinny about the Maxi's effectiveness on deer in Indiana.

Yes, ream that Magnum to a Maximum, PROVIDED ITS ON AN SB2 FRAME, of course.

I'll attest to the fact that the .357 Maximum is a deer hammer !!

I have been reloading for about 30 years mostly pistol because Indiana is not a rifle friendly state. Yeah 1.8 but what about the diameter.  Anyway you can tell if its a SB 1 or 2 ?  Who does the reaming for the MAX ?  Sounds like a good idea.  My father in law who is 79 said it only holds one bullet (he uses a semi shotgun for deer) I told him most of the time you only get one good shot.  Our farm in Orange Co is mostly woods and 70 yards would be a long shot.

There are a lot of people out here running their 357 max on the SB1 frame the gun came on, including myself.  I suspect more than those that switched to a SB2 frame.  158 grain loads at 1950 fps and 192 grain loads at around 1850 fps.  Certainly a SB2 frame is stronger and would be wise if one intends to hot rod the max but I still don't think it is absolutely a must for normal 357 max loads.

The 357Maxi will work fine on either SB1 or SB2 as long as loads are within published data as Gohon pointed out. The differences between SB1 and SB2 are shown in the FAQs, biggest difference is SB1 are cast iron, SB2 are steel alloy, the rifle SB1 frames(357 and 44 Mags) also have smaller rifle type firing pins as opposed to the larger shotgun pin on shotgun SB1s. Rechambering can be done yourself, this was just discussed a recently in the thread below.

Sorry to stray off topic a bit, but can a .357 barrel still be fitted to an SB1 shotgun frame even though it has the larger firing pin? I have a 20 gauge SB1 from 2001 I believe and was hoping to have a trapper 357 barrel fitted to it. Thanks!

I believe the factory will mount a 44, 357, or a Hornet on a shotgun frame. But not a Versa Pack.

Okay, if you say the SB1 is okay to run the Maxi, do you think it will be safe with a 185 grain flat nose gas checked cast lead bullet over 20 grains of H110 using small rifle primers ? If thats the case, I'm the proud owner of a second Handi in .357 Maximum.  ;D

I agree, reaming the .357 Magnum to .357 Maximum is a very simple job. It took less than 5 minutes ! It took longer to ream my .44 Magnum to .445 Super Magnum.

357 mag or max would be plenty good at 70 yards. I'm a bad judge of distance and took a buck at 134 paces (and I'm 6'4") with 357mag. Double lunged it and blew out the drivers side shoulder. it dropped where I shot it.

Welcome! I think they will, but you'd have to check with H&R, they updated the accessory barrel page which has conflicting information, give em a call and ask, they'll need the frame serial number. (866)776-9292. The barrel section states they'll fit them to SB1 frames, but the criteria at the top of the page says SB2 made  since 1999 only.

Negative on the Hornet, 357 and 44 mag only IF they're still doing it, see my previous reply to the OP.

That should be fine, Hornady lists more H110 than that under a 180gr jacketed bullet in their TC data, but working that load up from start would be prudent, don't just use the same load that you're using in your current Maxi.  ;) The Maxi has a SAAMI MAP of 40kpsi and case head of .379" for a ball park breech thrust of 4513lbs, compared to 36kpsi and .457" for the 44mag @ 5905lbs, the 44mag being factory available on an SB1 frame.

...  My father in law who is 79 said it only holds one bullet (he uses a semi shotgun for deer) I told him most of the time you only get one good shot.  Our farm in Orange Co is mostly woods and 70 yards would be a long shot.

My brother and I had a similar conversation a few years ago, being in Ky there are very few restrictions on what you deer hunt with.  He hunts with a Browning BLR in .308.  The year in question I was packin my .45-70 Handi.  I heard my brother shoot 9 (yes nine he reloaded twice!) times.  I strolled toward the area of the farm he was hunting, along the way I kicked up a 6 point buck at about 80 yards.  That single shot rang out and the deer fell on the spot.  The only bullet hole in the deer was mine, unless you count the one through an ear (about .30 cal).  The point is if you can shoot and really shoot well a single shot rifle is more than enough gun.  Ream that magnum to Maximum, and dial in a good handload, and show them why a single bullet is all you need!!
keep em talkin' while I reload
