22 pellets in 223 brass with primers

      Don't quite know what forum to ask this in,  wanting to get my son more trigger time on his 223 handi, on the barn pidgeons
   and sparrows with 22 pellets in 223 brass with rifle primers or 209,s (have lots of 209's).

Well I havn't done that in my 223 but do it quite often in my hornet. Works well and is totally silent.

On one of the email suppliers that I get occasionally, (Sportsman's Guide?) they had a case already made up for 209 primers, and crimped for a 22 pellet.  You might want to check.

I was confused for a while until I realilzed that you were talking about .22 caliber pellets, not 22 individual pellets stuffed into a .223 case.  I have done it with standard primers just to see what happened (it works), but I think that 209 primers would give the pellets magnum pellet gun velocity.  The only problem that I see is that there will have to be some sight adjustment.  Has anybody tried this?

I haven't tried that.  I have fired primers only for various reasons and they always back out a little.  Open the flash hole up a bit and it should work great.

Saw this post. Now I got a project.
Drilling the flash hole to full size makes sense.
209s will require a larger primer pocket, then a funky manual primer install, probably with a dowel.
Would you expect a significant difference in velocity with a 209 over a large rifle primer in a 22-250?

Are 22 pellets .224 or .220?
Would it matter?

      Would anyone happen to known the drill sizes,  you would need for the flash hole and the 209 hole?  I can see the center
punches in the neck.  HMMMM,  177-17rem, 20-204, 22-223,22-22-250, 25-257Bob, 2506, 257Roy.
The barn rats, pidgeons, and sparrows are going to have a long winter with my 10 year old on duty.

Boardshead - Win 209s are .245" at the widest seated part, and necks down halfway thru to .237".
I am going with a 1/4: drill, but first I am going to see what CCI-200 Large Rifle does, then magnums.
If I drill for 209, I drilling staight thru to transmit the most pressure down the barrel.

     Powwow, thanks for all your work, buried at work, will check in the experiments
as I get a chance to.    The sportsman guide examples had 3 or 4 centerpunches
at the depth in the neck of brass where the pellet should stop.

I first tried this 10 or so years ago and found that small rifle primers were good for target practice in the garage.  I tried a pinch (maybe a .1 grain) of Red dot with good results but I never got back to experimenting with it.  I've heard some guys say they've blown the skirt off the pellets with more powder. 

I'm getting ready to move but this is one of the things I'd like to experiment with more next winter...
