T3 tactical 300wm
« on: December 07, 2011, 04:00:49 PM »
just sold/traded my rem 700p in 308. now looking for a new "sniper" longer range rifle. i don't hunt at longe range but like to "bust rocks and punch paper" looking for a cartridge to do so. my father in-law shoots everything with his tc 300wm, i own a t3 in 338 and love it for big game and a vangaurd in 243 for long range (600+ yds) for coyotes and an AR 180B for everything else. but find the 338 alittle heavy in recoil for bench work and the 243 little in down range energy for much other than dogs. just looking for opinons and suggestions love the T3 action and inherit accuracy.

You do not say to what range you would like to shoot .
The t3 HB Varmintor the Tachical weighs in at 8Ibs with out the scope , so it should be a bit softer in recoil than your 338 F.
Personly I like the 6.5x55 as well as the 308W at the range, but then I do not shoot past 200 yds . For some serious distance look at the 300 WM .

You could also tame your T3 338 with a limbsaver pad . Made mine a pussy cat to shoot .

i regularly shoot out to 600 yds and occasionly out to 850 but could go out to a grand. i own a 6.5x55 swed in a M96 but have found the "cock on closing" and HEAVY two stage trigger difficult to manage and unless i go to a250gr match type bullet  @ 2900 fps in the 338 its difficult to match a 190gr .308 @ 3000fps. and truthfully a 155gr match bullet still shoots flatter out to 800

I would think a Model 96 in 6.5 as it was issued, is far from what one needs to go target shooting . They do shoot fairly good once you replace the trigger with an aftermarket unit as my experiance with a model 38 Husq..
After a bit of trigger work and lapping the lugs it became a fine hunting rifle .

I do have a few good accurate "hunting" rifles , but they are far from able to take 1000 yard shots as seen on TV with the New Savage rifle comerials ,and shown on with a cooper rifle
on the outdoor channel . The scope on these guns probably cost more than I have invested in just a rifle .

For your interst I would be looking more towards a 6.5 Credmore or something like a 6.5 284,offered buy Ruger and Savage , or just build your own with a heavy barrel .
The heavy bolt lift on a Savage to cock the rifle -to me is  3 times far worse than a rifle that cocks on closing , but then what ever you get used to .

while i know the 6.5/264 is remarkably accurate (usually) and ballistically superior. i think we lost track of my original post  ;) . wondering about opinions on the T3 tactical in 300win, planning on adding the muzzle break bi-pod and leupold LR scope.

I'm not sure what you're wanting to hear but I own a few Tikka rifles and my latest work was to re-barrel my T3 in .243 to a .257 Roberts.  I would think if you're looking for a long range rifle for accuracy, the Tikka would be hard to beat.
Yeah, I'm a rifle looney

My bad
I fail to see where you posted any questions concerning the T3 Tactial 300 WM though you do have it as a title .They are indeed a fine rifle worth going window shopping for .
Have you shot your father in laws gun ?  For sure shooting his would give you some idea if you like to shoot one and are happy with the cost involved to feed it . Would you use the break or are you close to a fellow shooter ?I had a break in my 6.5 and lost friends real quick and was not allowed on the range with the break on it . (Too Loud !!)
The 6.5x284 not offered by tikka ,would save some $$ in powder as well as reciol .That is about 50 grs of powder vs about 80 Grs a crack to basicly place the same hole on target .

You making a big change from the 308 P to the Tikka Tac.
Good luck with what you decide .

no worries. i like the idea and ballistics of 6.5 bullets. i do re-load, but like the idea of  being able to stop at any local hardware/gas station and finding a box of ammuntion. something really not probable with any of the more exotic rounds. i live in rural alberta and generally shoot by myself and always on private property so noise isn't a concern. i learned that lesson many years ago while guiding a client shooting a 7mm STW. while not un-common, the only ammunition we could find was 3hrs way, some would say bring more ammo but he had brought 60 rds (yeah he was that bad of a shot). though i didn't make it clear i was looking for opinions about the tactical T3, basically if anyone owns one and would suggest one. thanks for the in-put.
