newbie here with a newbie cannon question.
« on: December 08, 2011, 07:41:01 AM »
the hotchkiss revolving cannon is a 1880 cannon, but takes a cartrige instead of front loading like your more traditional black powder cannon. can you build this relatively modern cannon, and if so does it have to be an exact replica as far as the carriage is concerned or can a more custom or updated one be used as long as the cannon itself is original?

I look at this as question as for two different entities.

For our purpose here on this board, yes you can build it.

Legally the only correct answer has to come from ATF Technology Branch.  Write them a letter and ask.

Any answer you are given on the internet about the legality, take with a grain of salt.  There is just to much bad information on the internet.  That is why we don't allow discussion  any legal interpretations of the law on this board.  We don't want to be another source of bad information.

Exploding shells puts it into the Destructive Device catagory so don't go there.   ATF is sticklers for exact paperwork.  One key in cartridge guns is ammunition not available in commercial channels.

using solid shot?    good,       hand operation?  good,    no manufactured ammo?   good,   pre 1898?   good,    jsut just like the 1 inch cal. gatling that my friend built,  all full legal, but yes, get the letter that way you dont have to argue with cops if they see it, thats what everyone does that owns a gatling gun that i know, which makes 4 guns owners,
