.445
« on: December 10, 2011, 12:58:10 AM »
I have an old .44 mag barrel, overbore.  Would it be a good candidate for a ream to .445?? Or?

There are several members here that have "fixed" their over bore 44 mags by reaming them to 445 Super Mag. I say go for it. Put your name on the reamer list.

The 445 rechamber is pretty easy to do. I did mine earlier this season. It will probably take you about 10 minutes to do. Just keep plenty of oil on the reamer and in the chamber. Brush the metal shavings off the reamer about every 3 to 5 turns. You'll be good to go.

Don't ream too deep. As soon as the reamer contacts the rim, STOP.   :D

Warsaw, IN is about an hour drive from my house, just shoot down SR 205 and make a right on US 30....Warsaw, Poland is considerably further.

When I go to Chicago to see my daughter, we stop at the Bob Evans in Warsaw for breakfast; that hour drive is just right to work up a good appetite ;D .

The 445 will make a great deer rifle for Indiana

Mine was an older over bore and I had it reamed to .445.  It is a superb shooter with 240 gr. XTPs and 240 gr. SWCGCs .433 dia. from Montana Bullet Works.  I seldom shoot mags in it any more, but I do load some SMs down to mag level.  Go ahead an ream it.  You've got nothing to loose and lots to gain.

I'm not from Indiana, but a short time ago, there was a discussion here about calibers for Indiana deer.  At the time, the .445 was something like a thou or two too long.  Did I hear they were changing that?

Not recommended for a SB1 frame with full-power loads so I would say "no" to the brazed or soldered lug too.

What Dinny said on the vintage barrel or SB1 frame, I changed the data link in the previous discussion link Dinny referred to, that data is no longer on AA's site, but I had save it before it disappeared.  ;D
