Freedom Arms Front Sight

In gray woods on a gray drizzly day, aiming at a gray deer I found that my FA sights also looked entirely gray (sun rising behind me).  I missed an opportunity at a nice buck because i could not make out my front sight at all against the deer and could see no light around the front sight.  I'm not sure that any iron sights would have worked well in those conditions but I would love to hear about your favorite replacement front sight for the FA.  A sight that would maintain contrast in changing field conditions but still allow for good 100 yard range shooting would be ideal.  Any suggestions?

Are they black now?  Try lamp black or flat black spray paint if they are not.  It only takes a few minutes to tape off the gun and shoot some paint on the sight.

I never cared much for colored sights but, the front sight on my JRC 500 stands out very nicely in most background situations, for me, anyhow? It's has a red line trom top to bottom.

Never tried them but Freedom Arms has fiber optic front sights in several colors. Green,red and orange i believe.

The Clements sight sounds very interesting.  Is the back of the sight you like straight vertical (patridge style) or does it have a steep slope?  The one I'm using now is a ramp which has a gentle slope.

Clements will make it the way you want - I had him make me a taller front post 0.100" wide, patridge style with a gold bar 1/3 down from the top.  His turn around time on FA sights is pretty fast - I ordered from him a couple times and the longest wait was a couple days shy of a month.

mine have a steep slope. I also have him put two gold bars for long range shooting on the ones hes made for me.

My favorite Freedom Arms revolver is my model 97  with 5 1/2" barrel in 44 special. It is a great deer gun for the woods and is very effective out to 75 yards with 240 gr hard cast bullets loaded up to 1050 fps. I too had a problem with the FA std sights so I ordered a green fibre optic sight from them and it is the ticket. My shooting has improved just with the addition of that sight. Good shooting!

I bought two new front sights to try.  I have the Freedom Arms green fiber optic and Ken O'Neill's under cut post.  Got in touch with Dave Clements last week and his sight takes 2-3 weeks to make so I'll  try these first.  I've shot each at the range on mostly sunny days.  With sunlight on the sights it is hard to to see the original ramp front sight when aimed at a dirt bank.  With Ken's post, the sight stays jet black in the sun and stands out against the dirt bank - also gives a clean, classic  sight picture.  The fiber optic works better than I expected and shows up very well while still allowing for accurate shooting.  I had no problem at all with the square rear and this sight (should be great for black bear or black hogs).  For deer hunting they both work better than the original ramp at handling varying light conditions.  Honestly, I'm glad to have both and I doubt that the original ramp will see much hunting time.

I think just about every single action i have has had the ramp sight replaced. I just dont understand why manufactures still use them. Must be nostalsia as they sure work pitifully.
