I believe you will need a prescription in America for that. Part of the reason being, doctors are afraid that they will be misused-as in not taking  enough to actually kill the bacteria and creating a tougher strain of it.
The other part is greed on the pharmecutcal companys.

At a farm supply store, you can buy amoxillin, in powder form, along with a dosage chart by the pound of the animal.  People use the same per pound.  It's the same drug, according to a vet friend.

I'd suggest getting on SurvivalBlog and doing some research on antibiotics.  There was a great article this summer or maybe fall about which ones to use for what infections.  I understand that you can go to Mexico and get what you want over the counter.

What you really need to  do is develop a trusting relationship with your primary doctor and explain what you would like to stock.  He/she may give you a prescription and thn when it expires if you show the unused portion they might renew.  It keeps 1 full dose set available. I suggest Cipro and/or Vibromyocin.  his is what I take along when I travel internationally.

This.

My doctor is pretty good about listening. He has supplied a couple prescriptions to take along while traveling out of the country, with directions as to indications and dosing as well. As long as you don't start self medicating and then going to him for refills I believe you'll be alright.

Then again some doctors seem to be all to willing to prescribe wether you need or want the drugs. A wink and a nod and the Vicodin trade has taken off. Who needs a dealer when the pharmacy and doctor are in cahoots.  Like I used to say Elvis tested and NFL approved. ;)

Be very careful about trying to stockpile antibiotic syrum. It has an expiration date, and can turn dangerous beyond that date....
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

I have found the following books by Ragnar Benson to be indispensable.

  • Do-It-Yourself Medicine: How to Find and Use the Most Effective Antibiotics, Painkillers, Anesthetics and Other Miracle Drugs... Without Costly Doctors' Prescriptions or Hospitals
  • Guerrilla Gunsmithing: Quick And Dirty Methods For Fixing Firearms In Desperate Times
  • Live Off The Land In The City And Country
  • Survivalist's Medicine Chest
  •
I plan to get the following.

  • Survival Nurse: Running an Emergency Nursing Station Under Adverse Conditions
  •
I also haunt the Goodwill, Ark, Savers stores for used medical books, the best of which are the Merk Manual (get a 1940-50's vintage) and then the latest one you can.  Also the latest copy (usually you can get one  less than 10 years old) of the Physicians Desk Reference.  You can also find textbooks on nursing, EMT, first aid all of which make up a great medical library.  There is also the special forces medical/medic book.

There are a lot of good medicines available for veterivary use that are the same as the ones for humans. That is why they sometimes impound vet supplies when there is a hurricane, flood, tornado or other potential disaster.
Midstates, Rural King, TSC, Big Blue Stores all carry a good supply. Maybe even Farm Bureau CO-OP.
And places like Wal-mart and Walgreen will fill prescriptions for your critter, too.
(And you can maybe pull rank on your dog, if not the wife)

Make sure that nobody in you family or survival group has drug allergies/reactions before dispensing!!

Do not give injections to unconcious people without knowing allergies/reactions  beforehand!

Other than that, a very good idea to have on hand along with other OTC items like temporary filling kits, etc.

Try walgreens, wal mart, or just about any other drug store. Check in the dental section, paste, brushes, wash, etc. I keep six on hand along with ambesol or clove oil. Of course stock up on guaze, triple antibiotic cream, mole skin, etc, etc.

Emergency Essentials stocks and sells emergency filling kits...beprepared.com is their website.  The proprietors have given me excellent service.

+1 on Anbesol or clove oil for temporary anaesthetic.  Use Dremel tool attachments (small diamond-tip?) for drill...haven't had any volunteers to test this yet.

Feed stores in this area stock generic penicillin injectable for critters.  Also have syringe kits, albeit with huge needles.  You can scrounge syringes and needles off your doc or PA if they trust you.  Feed stores also sell sewing kits, or they're easy to make from regular sewing needles.  Plain cotton thread will work as suture material; everything has to be (should be) sterilized before use.  Soak it in alcohol for a few minutes prior to use.

I wonder if vaccum packing antibiotics would preserve them better.

Antibiotics are regulated so that non-professionals do not self-medicate. The medical profession is starting to see strains of diseases that were historically treated with antibiotics that are now resistant to treatment. Pharmaceutical companies then have to develop new stronger antibiotics to deal with this situation, and its getting worse.

Long term storage of antibiotics is best accomplished in a refrigerated environment.

Be very careful with the choices that you make...I would strongly advise reading up on the treatment of diseases through the use of antibiotics.

Keeping some amoxacilin on hand may be a good idea.  there are definitely some probalems you may run into, but the idea of keeping a bit on hand is good.

Skin staplers are good too.  Real handy when a dog or goat gets an ear ripped.  Maybe a life saver in a pinch.

So then would storing them in a freezer help them last even longer?

The bottles of injectable stuff at the feed store say "don't freeze".  Some of the books I have on hand say that pills & powders are okay down to about 25 degrees F.  Ointments should not be frozen.

I'm not sure about vacuum packing prior to refrigeration; couldn't hurt.

There are several books available on the survival sites and places like Amazon that deal with the subject of self-help medical strategies for when TSHTF, for those with limited or no medical training.  Self-help is not the best choice, but it may be the only choice, and one should be prepared for it.

I have bought this stuff in powder form.  Mixed with sterile water it could be injected, but as is it could be mixed and used orally.  It has a very long shelf life this way.

As noted above, this should only be something used for a last resort.  As long as the Dr. is available, I will use him.

I have bought this for my animals.  Works fine.

Mexico! I had a friend a few years ago pick some pharmaceutical grade antibiotics for pennies on the dollar, while they were visiting down there.

Your right Dee.  Some years ago I bought a sack full of my cholesterol medicine, as well a other stuff for pennies on the dollar.  The only thing you couldn't buy easily were schedule 4 narcotics, and I've got a feeling if you were serious you could have found those as well.

It's funny how the same drugs there are so much cheaper than here....

Once you've selected the antibiotics that you need...look on the internet for an MSDS sheet for that chemical and look up Proper Storage. Most cannot be frozen, or they loose viability as an effective drug. Refridgeration seems to work for quite a few and there are some that just degrade with time, no matter what you do to try and store them long term.

Antibiotics are typically designed the be used within a 12 month period, and are not intended for long term storage.
