Nice shootin' Doc! ;D    Now I gotta put IMR4227 on my to try list for my 45-70 shorty.  My barrel is about 3/8" shorter than yours so I am sure I will lose a lot of range. ::)

Great shooting, wish i could use a 45/70 in my area for deer. I have wanted one since i joined this forum due to reading posts like your's, I'm all about the iron sights too, i even added them to my .17hmr and the .223 BBL i got from you a while back, both with peep sights and just love shooting "Old School"

I can appreciate what you mean about a lighter barrel, thats why i mounted the irons to it, saves the 1 pound of scope weight. I too have problems depending on light conditions with the irons and i have near perfect vision, so what i do is use the peep like a traditional sight and place the front sight bead just above the top of the peep, essentially giving a longer sighting radius than a standard middle of the barrel mounted sight, much faster for hunting than trying to locate your target looking through a peep sight. Give it try you might be surprised.

Not to divert conversation here, but I'm going to put a front sight and skinner peep on my .223 Squirrel assassinator!  hehe  I was looking at the NECG barrel band style, but was just curious how you attached yours or what model you used?  ;)

Hi Tacklebury

try this link http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,232144.0.html
it shows a .223 bull barrel i bought from Gendoc earlier in the year and lists the info on the sights i used. If i could do it all again i would buy 1 size lower front sight insert as i am almost maxed out of adjustment. But for me it doesn't really matter anyway as like i mentioned earlier i use the top of the wgrs peep just under the front bead and that works perfectly.

Thanks bud.  Mine's the heavy barrel which is larger and I was hoping to fit it without drill/tap, appreciate the info though.  ;)
