44 spc/44mag die
« on: December 11, 2011, 01:37:36 PM »
I have a CH 44 spc/mag sizing die that came with some misc dies. I went to size a 44 mag case with it today and it adds a slight shoulder and necked down the case like a 44-40. The neck starts about 7/8" to 15/16" from the rim of the case. Any Idea what this is other than a miss marked die. Thanks Tom
(Note added: I have been reloading for over 40 years, every thing was set up correctly)

First thing I thought was same as you, 44-40...Look the makkins over closer, does it say 44WCF?

Maybe pull it appart and give it a good cleaning.

Either try screwing your die up or use a washer under it to get the proper height. I'ts badly misadjusted.

It is clean and been  checked with a light and mag. glass. It has a shoulder and smaller neck built into it.  The writing is 44 spl/mag as I said in first post. The shoulder starts about 7/8 th" from bottom of die. MY first thought maybe something was just stuck in it, but it is one solid piece.

Tom W; if I did as you suggest then I would only size  about 1/2 the 44 mag case. It should be  straight walled  die and should not have a shoulder in it. I can't adj the shoulder. It was in the proper adj when I ran the case thought it.
