Powder burn rate for Encore Pistols
« on: January 15, 2004, 03:14:32 PM »
O.K., I know this is a reloading question, but I thought I'd post it here first.

Do you need to be concerned with the burn rate for loads out of the Encore pistol length barrels?  What I'm getting at is . . . do you need a faster burning powder so that all/most of the powder is burned up before the bullet exits the barrel?

I was looking at powders that would do double duty and give me accurate and fast loadings for the .308 in pistol form and the .223 in rifle form.  Hogdon Varget looked like a good choice for both, not sure about the burn rate.

If anyone has some input on the burn rate topic please post.  Also, any favorite powders for the .308 or other large caliber (i.e. rifle type cartridges) out of the pistol barrel (15").

Thanks in advance for your input.

only way to know how a powder is gonna do in your gun, or barrel is to try it and see. a slow powder may be accurate in a short barrel. certainly a good rifle load could also be a good handgun load. each barrel is different, and will have it's own preference. just stay by the books, and you'll be fine. i use h4895 in my 7-08, and it's great. :-)

Faster burning powders will loose less velosity than slower burning powder as you shorten  the barrel, but it`s not really going to mean much, may 10 yrds. max. point blank range. Accuracy is far morw important.

Generally the powders that give the best velocity in a rifle give the best velocity in a handgun.

If you go to Reload Bench.com, site index, powder burn rates, they list 147 powders by their burn rate.

This may help you choose a good powder for your TC Encore.  I have used IMR 4895 and Reloader 19 with good results in a 15" 260 Rem.
The Reloder 19 has much more muzzle blast and recoil for the same performance with IMR 4895.

Good Luck, Rol

I have found in my barrels that most listed powders for any given cartridge will work fine. I usually lean to the faster powders in the magnum cartridges (300Winmag, 338Winmag) seems to give me better velocity and accuracy. These are 15" barrels and seem to prefer the faster powders that are listed in my reloading manuals.

Gentlemen,

The case capacity and bullet weight determin the best powder for a cartridge - the length of the barrel only controls velocity not pressure.
The same powders that work well in a 24 inch rifle will give the same pressures in the 10 inch Encore.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.

Any thoughts on Hogdon Varget powder?  Seemed like a hot and accurate powder.

I prefer the faster burning powders for a given caliber in short barrels, it cuts down the muzzle flash/blast.
