Do I need a 20ga pardner?
« on: December 12, 2011, 11:13:29 AM »
I've been thinking about getting a 20ga for quite some time.  The thing is I don't think I really need it.  It seems I can shoot light loads in my 12ga and be in 20ga territory.

There really isn't a better tool for squirrels with the leaves on than a full choke 20 gauge with #6 shot. .410 just don't have a heavy enough pattern and 12 gauges dang near blow em apart at 15 yards. Maybe a 16 gauge, but the shells are powerfully expensive in these parts (and I've never actually seen a 16 gauge Pardner).
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

That close I aim about 2" off the tip of there nose.  It pretty much destroys their head, but the body is shot free.  I guess I'll have to go by one after christmas and try it out.

Seems like a silly question to me...Of course!  I bought a 20 gauge probably 15 years ago and it was the reason I fell in love with NEF's.  I have been noticing a lot of Pardners in the want advertiser lately and it got me thinking that I needed another 20 for my son to use.  I ran an ad looking for "reasonably priced pardner shotgun".  Guy about an hour away called me and said that he a 12 gauge mod. and a 20 gauge mod. and that he would take 175.00 for both...long story short, they looked like new and are now happy in my safe!  I couldnt break up the set!  ;D
my tally now...(2) 20 gauge pardners, 12 gauge pardner, handi 357 max,  handi 223, handi 4570, handi 22 hornet, handi 3030, handi SideKick and still lookin!  ;)

Yeah...for 175.00 I told my wife I couldnt go wrong... ;D   The 12 g was a 1991 gun and the 20 g was a 1996 both absolutely looked like new and both real firm an d tight when you open them.  VERY little use and and the schnable (spelling) forend that I like so much.  All my friends think I am nuts with my love for NEFs.  I have my AR, Mini14, bolt rifles etc...but they are all just guns!  These are HANDIS right!  8)

I can guarantee I will never catch up with quick.  I was on the road yesterday (actual work is always interfering with my life) and I did stop at a local gun shop wheer I had seen one of the 45 colt BC's last summer for 265.00.  Since I do have the disease, I had to stop by and see if it was still there...just in case I needed to make him an offer.  ;)   He said that he literally sold it a week ago.  I certainly dont need it, but I figured if she was still there at this point, I would make him an offer.  Saves me having to buy another set of dies!  ::)   He did have a 243 there with a little 2 or 4x scope for 249.00 but it just didnt cry out to me!  ;D

If you have no other 20, why, yes, the H&R 20s are a nice place to start. Though I preferred a recoil pad on mine (it has now gone to a young man who 'outgrew' his youth 410), the hard pad was OK with my factory 2 3/4" #6 loads. Where it not for finding a pair of doubles (a SxS and an O/U), each under 6 pounds, I would have kept it.
The 20s are a lovely gauge.

I do have a yildiz 20 O&U that ways in around 5.5lbs.  I just find it way to pretty to hunt with.  It also kicks like a stubborn mule.  I have only put 2 boxes through it on the skeet range.  Most of the time when I'm heading out with a shotgun I grab my 12 ga H&R.

Hey StumpJpr, I can understand the 'too pretty' part, but I know there are reasonably priced 20ga. loads that dont kick all that bad, just look for some that dont try to make a 20 a 12.

I was cleaning up my workshop/reloading area, and one of things I used to do was just dump shotgun hulls onto one box. I decided to separate them out and the 20ga hulls outnumber the 12ga hulls 2-1

Naw, of course you don't need it. You need two of them for starters. One for a smooth bore for all around shooting, and a fully rifled 20 guage for a 20 ga. rifle. Too much fun.

I think you should go for it , I have one with the 26 inch mod. barrel and I have killed more squirrels and rabbits with it than any other gun in my safe. I dont think you can have too many guns so what would one mmore hurt?

I don't even shoot shotgun and I have two.  One's my wife's closet gun.  Plus a Tracker 20 and my daughter's 20 shorty with rifle sights.  Besides they are no longer being made.  Get a few and you can always trade them for something.

Guess I'm crazy Handiholic.

If two for $175... great deal.
