handgun cal. rounds in a bolt action rifle.
« on: December 13, 2011, 02:19:06 AM »
Ok Ruger made the 44mag in a M77. Now they have the 357 mag. There have been others from Spain etc.
Going back to the invention of the bolt gun it was /has been more difficult to feed a rimmed case in a bolt gun. It is also been in recent times that some states allow a stright walled case handgun round to be used inplace of a slug gun. So there is a market for such guns. The complaints I have heard about the M77 in 44 was they were not so accurate. With the 357 they did not feed smooth.
My question is why not make a M77 or say a Mod 7 Rem in 10 mm or 38 super ( or one of the 38 auto rounds ) ? Or the true .380 size auto I mentioned in another post ? It should feed well in a bolt gun and should be accurate . Anyone think 50 action express or shch would work ?
Maybe Ruger shyes away since they don't offer a 10mm handgun and see the rifle as a companion gun but Remington could do it.
There are 10mm AR 15's now.

I wonder if the bolt guns in handgun calibers are going to be successful.  If they are it will be because Eastern deer hunters like to carry light.  For about 60 years Winchester and Colt made fortunes selling 44-40 and 38-40 rounds chambered in lever action rifles and single action revolvers.  The reason for the success was men working in the West could only afford two guns and they wanted to travel light and a common caliber was a good solution.  Now days, anybody wanting to go light might find a 100 yard pistol caliber attractive.

That sounds like a good idea , but also the use of handgun rounds in a rifle to replace the slug gun is in the mid west so it might appeal to many. I think I would like one in 10mm as a truck gun. Add a suppressor where legal ........... ;D

I think the Ruger rifles have more to do with the calibers than with the case.
357 and 44 mag are popular rounds and have enough for deer and other medium to large game.
The Destroyer carbine was made in 9mm largo, a rimless round that looks like a long 9mm luger or 38 super.
For a while there was a 44 Auto mag, and a 357 auto mag that used the 308 case cut to the length of 44 mag and a necked version shooting 357 bullets.
But the rounds never caught on.  They are not popular and the 44 mag and 357 mag are.
The ability to shoot light to heavy loads out of the 44 mag bolt action, something that my 44/99 auto loader does not do, give a great entry level rifle that is short, light and with little recoil makes a great youth rifle.

I think you are correct, but the day of the auto round is here . A friend of mine totes a Ruger rifle that shoots 40 S&W when he drives deer dogs . It works well on white tail deer.

In 91 when H&K announced that they were going ot make hte MP5/ 94 in 10mm I wanted one for deer in the swamp.  Though it would be great little carbine with lots of oomph for the deer in VA and NC.
Then the assault weapons ban came in and none were brought in.
It does not take a lot to kill a white tail.
If someone came up with a 35, 40, 41, 44, or 45 round that is rimless and necked, meets the state deer rifle round law and stuck it in a bolt action, I think you would have a winner of a round.
I say necked as the strait wall rinless rounds are hard to head space.
A rimmed round head spaces on the rim, a belted round head spaces on the belt, and a necked round like 30-06 head spaces on the shoulder.
Having a pistol round like 45ACP or 9mm head space on the mouth of the case is a pain for high pressure rounds like the above mentioned 44 Auto mag.

True on the shoulder but in states where the HG cartrage rifle is allowed it must be stright walled. Ruger with the controled round feed would have the advantage as the claw would hold the cartrage if it was fed from the magazine in much the same way most auto loading pistols do contray to what many believe . The push feed would make chamber demisions critical as you noted.

Then maybe a short belted mag case with a 458 bullet to keep starit wall.
or a Weatherby 224 case strait walled to 35 or 37 caliber.
The micro CZ action also has the mauser claw and the belt keeps the head spacing easy.

Maybe.
Depends on how you word it when you write them a letter.
I have this Idea vs.  He is an idea i worked out for you.
Loading data, pressure, velocity, Engergy, and what the SAMMI specs should be.
If you call the 375 strait wall case .370 CZ or 370 Ruger carbine and make it fit in the 77/44 frame..... If you call it .38 shootall, not so much
You do all the work and you will get the credit.
Do you think the guys that told the Wright Brothers, it would be neat to put an engine on that kite and zoom around, got credit for the plane?
