Cocking a lever action ?
« on: December 14, 2011, 11:11:57 AM »
I have a Marlin 336 and know how it works, but is there a lever action that you need to pull the hammer back after racking in a shell to cock it ? The reason I'm asking is because I was watching the movie Cowboys & Allians and saw a guy rack in a shell with the lever action and then cocked the hammer back to shoot it. That just didn't seem right.

He had a Spencer rifle. The lever loaded a new cartridge, but you had to manually cock.
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

yup Spencer was one of the early ones that needed a separate cocking operation.  I seem to remember one other, but can't quite remember what it was??  Do any of you??

I keep wanting a Spencer replica, then I see the prices for decent ones and decide to keep eating enough to stay alive....

Ipy,  I haven't seen the movie yet, I'll watch for the scene now, but do you remember if the guy had a Spencer, or a model 94 type? In other words was the movie making an effort to be authentic, or were they showing their typical hollywood ignorance?

Looked back in slowmo . In one scene Harrison Ford and a boy are walking along with there horses and the rest of the group are walking behind them and the guy with the glasses is carrying his gun. In another scene a guy is shooting at a couple of bottles and racks the gun then cocks it. Both guns do not have a magazine tube under the barrel and it does look like it might be a Spencer.

I've seen the movie. It's definitely a Spencer. I noticed it right off the bat since I've been wanting one. Was really hoping it would play a prominent role in the movie and spark some huge renewed interest (ala Quigley) and cause some lower cost reproductions to be made....but no.

I'm impressed, that is a big recommendation for the movie. I'm sick of going to movies that cannot get the most basic facts about firearms right.

Yeah well, it's also hot an alien invasion, so there's probably some inaccuracies in there.

Well who among us would know how many shots an alien gun holds let alone whether you have to cock it after you work the action.

I was thinking more in the aerodynamics or "they traveled a million light years to steal some gold" section on errors.... But it was fun to watch!

Maybe aliens have long lifespans. Ah well that's hollywood. That's why I almost never watch movies anymore, and those I do watch are often foreign.

As long as they don't start telling us we need to wreck the global economy to start preparing for imminent alien invasion ("Day After Tomorrow" and ""An Inconvenient Truth") I don't care how they stretch the truth so long as the avoid inaccuracies with major historical events. You wouldn't believe the confusion kids have about the end of WWII thanks to "Inglorious Bastards".

Hey, I was an alien until we were naturalized!  Now I have a paper which says I am a citizen of the US of A.  Don't knock aliens!   ;D
