Varmint Bullet for a 270 WCF
« on: December 14, 2011, 05:08:02 PM »
Can anyone recommend a good bullet and/or load for use in a 270 Winchester that would work for varmints? I was thinking something in the 130 grain would be nice because the trajectory would be similar to that of my deer loads but haven't seen anything. Thinking I might have to drop to a 110 grain.

My 700 270win liked the 110gr hp and 54.6gr. imr 4350,cci 200,excellent 100yd groups, haven't tried further distance. You could probably get more input asking this in the handloading for rifle section.

I used to shoot the 110 gr. Sierra over a full load of 4831.

I toyed with lighter bullets in my 270, 110's, even installed a target trigger and higher mag scope on it just to get some use out of it on varmints since I no longer hunt big game.   Ended up just using up the 130's I had left for deer, and later when they ran dry the 150's I had used for elk.

For vermin you're not going to eat or save fur from any bullet your rifle likes will do just fine, including your deer bullet, and it would be lots of very good practice for when you do go after Bambi.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I like hornady 110 grain v-max. Very flat shooting when zero'd at 200 yards i am good to go out as far 300 + or - with no hold over required on yotes. slightly less recoil than 130/150 grain weights too. terminal performance is devistating to say the least.

I found that the Sierra 90 grain hollow points make spectacular wounds plus they have relatively the same point of impact as my 130Grain deer loads.  I shot a big jackrabbit once with the 90 grain and there were rabbit chunks all over a 40 foot area. Truth is the 130 kill with authority and dont blow everything up.
