Got some new grips for a couple of my single actions
« on: December 15, 2011, 06:12:32 AM »
I'm in the process of replacing the grips on my single actions with something a bit more appealing to the eye. Here are some photos of the two that recently arrived from Altamont Grips.

Purty!! Ivory and other light-colored panels always look nice on blued Blackhawks-

--is that a "brass" ejector housing?

Nope not brass.

The Single Six was sent to Mag-na-port. What I really wanted done was an action job, recrown the barrel, chamber the other end of barrel and number the chambers. Kenny wanted to do the plating job and jeweling as well so I said go for it. The plating is titanium I believe he said. In hand it has a gold colored appearance but yes I can see how in the photos it could be mistaken for brass.

The grips came from Altamont Grips http://www.altamontco.com/ the price is $28 per set and the scrimshaw work added $30 each for a total of $58 per set plus shipping. I think my total bill was $125 and change if I recall correctly. I had them within about a week or so of calling my order in to them. They have a toll free phone number. From what Doug said they make a lot of the grips for Ruger that they put on the guns and that they sell for aftermarket as well. They cost less direct but they can't put the Ruger logo medallion on. I asked and he said nope couldn't do it.

Heck Richard call Doug up and ask him if he can make some for your Uberti's. He might can even if it's not cataloged. I don't know that am just saying it don't hurt to ask.

Those are nice! I recently bought a pair of Black/Silver grips from Altamont to go on my stainless single six.

Richard, your Navy grips are the same as the Uberti Cattleman grip.  The SAA clones and the Navy's are the same grip frame.  Enjoy.  44 Man

Geeeze they look nice Bill!  I emailed the company and got a thank you for the link to this thread, but no answer to my question about grips for my '51 & 61 Navys.  :-\

But:

Richard, your Navy grips are the same as the Uberti Cattleman grip.  The SAA clones and the Navy's are the same grip frame.

Thanks to Lewis' tip I think I'll order a set and try to do the final fit myself!   :D

Amendment:  But I guess not from Altamont Grips.  I don't see anything for Colt type SA's...  :(

So, armed with the info Lewis gave us I know just where to look!   ;D

Did they fit right on Bill, or did they require some fitting?

The grips for the Single Six fit but the grips with the buffalos on the BH didn't. I called and was told to use a flat tip screwdriver to slightly enlarge the hole the pin goes in. I did and then they fit.

I finally made it out today to my range to try them out. POI has shifted using them so I'll need to sight in again but no biggie. One of the panels on the Bisley is a bit loose I found out today under recoil. I'll pull it tomorrow and see if I can figure out why. If I can't fix it I'll see if Ruger will replace it.

I haven't shot the Single six with the new grips yet as I only shot the 44 Special and 45 Colt today and let Wyatt (Matt's youngest) shoot his 22 rifle. I'd get ten shots then Wyatt got ten shots and we switched back and forth between me and him shooting.

Bill, FWIW, Ive found sometimes the top, front of a grip panel isnt quite snug enough into the frame; Ive used 'shims' made of the thin black plastic from TV dinner trays on my blue guns were needed . A little smear of a plastic compatible adhesive keeps such in place.
