Best Arisaka I've ever seen
« on: December 15, 2011, 03:22:13 PM »
I was at a local gun shop today and he had a minty Arisaka in 6.5 mm.  I have never seen one as nice as this one.  Everything including the sling and dust cover is on it and the chrysanthemum is nice and sharp, I didn't know they could look that nice.  It was out of a private collection.

What were they asking for it?  I have a de-mil'd one that Dad brought back in the 50's with no 'mum that looks really nice.  Most of the ones I've seen in the shops were rough with a bubba'd stock and they wanted $100 for them.  I would think the 'mum would add quite a bit of value.

This isn't one of the late war ones that look like they were made with a cold chisel, it is pre-war and is machined very well.  The price is around $900.00.

WAY to high of a price. anything over about 400.00 is to high.
there is just not that much collector interest in them any more

As someone else wrote....$900 way too high for what should be a type 38 Arisaka, if it is a 6.5(x50) Jap caliber.  Type 99 introduced about 60 years later and it has a 7.7 bore and production of it began shortly before WWII.  When made late in WWII, the type 99 is referred to as the "last ditch" rifle since its quality of manufacture suffered.  Of course, it might be a Type "I", Italian Carcano made rifle sent to Japan chambered with same cartridge in the 6.5 Jap.....one of these in pristine condition may be worth more....but still not worth $900.  Have 2 nicely sporterized 6.5 Type 38s and one Type I...all rechambered from 6.5x50 to 6.5X57 (which is a necked up 257Roberts).  Something commonly done in years after WWII since the 6.5x50 Jap ammo wasn't available.  Don't think I paid over $125 for any of them.  Gent at range I shoot recently bought a type 99 sporter for $100 that was rechambered to 30-06....barrel was still the original 7.7 Jap (.312 or so bore).  Saw his target after shooting rifle for first time using factory Remington 30-06 (.308 bullet) and egads, guy was  shooting legit 3/4" 100 yard groups with it.   On a really good day, I can shoot a 1" group with one of my 6.5x257Rs, most of time 1 1/2" is norm.

I have a type 38 rebarreled in 260 Rem. (6.5 Rem) I love the gun. with a timney trigger and a Leuplod scope, she clove leafs at 100 yrds.
Short, light fast handleing and light recoil. What more could you want from a gun. I have taken a few shots at 200 yrds and was impressed but haven't taken a deer past 200 yet. Looken forward to that!!!!!!

Pristen pre war matching numbers and an intact mum. These are fairly rare. Due to the fact that it was a disgrace for the emperors symbol (the mum) to be captured. As a result most imported Jap rifles have the mum ground off or disfigured some how. There is always the asking price and the selling price. Do some home work and find out what it really ought to sell for and then make an offer. You might be surprised.

Actually it is nothing I would want unless I could make a buck off it, and it is not that cheap.  It will go to Gun Broker and some collector who will appreciate it will get it.
