Went Handi shopping today and ended up with a.....
« on: December 15, 2011, 04:20:17 PM »
Marlin 1894 in 44 magnum. ;D  Not really sure how it happened... I was looking at a bunch of Handi's and everything was going fine. Next thing I know there was a beautiful 1894 in my hands and I was shelling out a deposit on it. :o  I guess it's not really a sin because of the Marlin/H&R connection but I still feel a little guilty about straying from my usual Handi purchases.
I know some of you guys have 'em too so what say you??

Got one just like it.  (She's retired) Bet it has the gold saddle ring on the side.  Hunted with mine over 20 yrs in the Tunica Hills, grew up shootin fast and straight,  running those deer with dogs.  To my knowledge there is no faster pointing rifle than that little short carbine, except maybe a chopped handi rifle.

BTW, never lost a deer that I drew blood on.

I've done about the same thing.  Had a Smith and Wesson .45 that I was gonna trade for a lighter, smaller handgun, ended up swapping it for a Winchester Trapper .44.  Regretted losing a handgun for a rifle just long enough to see just how handy that short, lightweight .44 was.  Still have the Trapper, it'll probably be the very last rifle I have left when old age sets in, nothing better this side of 100 yards.

Sacrilege pure and simple to choose a levergun over the Handi Rifle you should be ashamed and to post about it too!!

I had a 44 marlin... Nice rifle, I never was enamored with the 44. (You remember ;) )

But you are correct many of us have a number of them.. Self included, I have a "few" Marlins too. ;;)

My first centerfire rifle was a .30-30 Marlin .336T, Straight Grip, Saddle ring.  I bought it in 1958 or 9.  I sold it along the line, but later bought the same model.  I still have it.  It is a sweet rifle, but I love my Handi .30-30 as well.  Since I got the Handi .32-20, I've got a letch for a Marlin 1894CL in 32-20.  I love that little caliber.  I'm sure lots of us have both Handis and Marlins.....after all, they're kissin' cousins.

I only got into Handi's a few short years ago, but that is pretty much what I use exclusively now, and I have a time tested and dear to me 30-30 Winchester model 94 that see's little use now days, but it will always have a special place, and one reason I probably will never own a Handi in 30-30 since I will always be true to that old 94.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Confession time.  I have a Marlin 336C in 30-30, always liked Marlins better than the Winchesters, but that said, I also have a pre-64 Model 94 in 30-30.
Guess I better quit while, I'm ahead.  Don't want to confess about the other brands I have. :-X

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

That little 1894 carbine in .44 mag was the first long gun I bought for my wife.  It was perfect for her at the time, once I had the stock cut down to fit her.  She carried it for six years, then decided she wanted a 30-06.

We still have that little carbine, both my sons learned to shoot and hunt with it.  Someday I'll be using it with the Grandkids.

Nothing wrong with that little gun.  Makes a nice saddle gun.  I carried it for the three years I was working out on the White Sands on horse back.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

  Hello Gents:
I handled a nice used SS44mag marlin this past summer it had a leu. scope IIRC anyway it was a nice scope, they wanted 550.00 and I could not talk myself into buying it. Next day it was gone have regretted not buying ever since, a beautiful little piece. I only own 2 marlin leverguns, a 35 rem and a 375 big bore. The 35 is my favorite brush-gun, if there is any such thing and the 180 grfn bullet has killed quite a few deer over the years.
I only started shooting my H&R's regularlly since I discovered this site this summer, had some since the 80's but was never  interested in them very much, but since I cut a topper jr down to 20 inches and put a rifle sight on it, the slugs are just GOOD FUN, I was surprised at the accuracy out to 50 yds. and it is so nice to carry also. The 38spec. insert is also fun to shoot. I'm glad I found out what I was missing on the H&R's, also a 45ACP insert for the 12ga.shorty is fun too.

Spanky,
I know of your affections toward your Handi 45 carbine. What you need to be on the lookout for is a "LIMITED" 1894 in 45COLT...

Factory 16" barrel, 45 Long Colt caliber fancy hand cut checkering, Buck horn sites NO VENTS in the barrel. (NO Comp) Its one of my cherished Marlins along with my Marauders.... But it doesn't "ring" your bell when shooting it as the 30-30 and 35 Rem will...

That's a nice one CW. For where I hunt it'd be perfect.
It's funny you mention the 45 too... I've got the shop owner looking around for one for me as we speak. ;)  I have really fallen in love with the 45LC.

I have had a Marlin 1894 in 44 mag for a long time. It has micro groove rifling and it has a half cock on the hammer, instead of a hammer safety. I bought it used back in the Eighties as a companion to my 44 Mag Virgina Dragoon. Still have both of them.

Good Luck and Good Shooting
