6.8 SPC
« on: December 16, 2011, 02:19:09 AM »
I bought a 23" 6.8 SPC barrell for my contender.  It was one of those too good to pass up deals.  I bought a box of 115 gr. ultra coreloct and 120 gr SST ammo to try.  I am planning on using it to hunt with.  It is so light and easy to carry thought it might make a good treestand gun.  My question is what ammo is best to shoot for deer hunting in this caliber and what is the effective range.  I currently shoot a 7-08 for deer and hogs.  Can't wait to get to shoot this gun.

I have taken deer the the 6.8, but i was using 130 Ballistic Tips, one shot, one kill. I have been shooting the 115 ultras and have yet to take a deer with them. The 115's shoot flatter than the 130's so I will continue to hunt with them for now. I have read good things about the 120's at 6.8 forums in the hunting section.

I use the sierra 110gr pro hunter. It mushrooms out pretty good out of a 16" barrel. 300 yards is about as far as I would want to go on a deer. I have taken them out to 250 some yards. Most have been under 100. They all were one shot. It has been quite effective for me. Your velocity will be a little higher, but sighted in at 200 for me is 11" low at 300.

I have the 23" barrel also.  It is a very accurate barrel.  Really haven't found a load it didn't like.  I have loaded 130 Bt's to 90 grain HP's..it shoots really tight groups with about everything!  The 110 grain Accubonds are what I think I will hunt with when the chance arrives.  Also have some Tipped Triple Shocks loaded, but have not fired any yet.

I know guys who use vmax bullets In this caliber to hunt with.  I asked why and was told that due to velocity, the vmax will function as a hunting bullet, entering the animal deeper before fragmenting.  Claims thet kill like lightening, when started out between 2,500 & 2,600 fps.

I just ordered a NIB 23" s/s bull Contender carbine barrel in 6.8SPC have to have an importer ship it from a FFL dealerin Blaine, Wash then have it imported by an importer into Canada which is going to bump the price by appr $125 - $150 due to the b*llschit US export laws on firearms parts.

I shoot an 18.6" barreled Robinson Arms XCR-L in 6.8SPC my hunting loads for 150 yards max are the 110gr Sierra Prohunters @ 2650fps.

My main go to hunting bullets are 95gr Barnes Tipped TSX @ 2825fps I've shot one mule deer at appr 90 yards with it the thing about the 95gr TTSX is that they will expand down to below 1700fps which makes this little cartrigde a 300 yard + combo for deer and I'll shoot out to 450 yards on coyotes.

I just hope my new barrel is as accurate as my XCR-L...

Last night I received an email from the Canadian importer the barrel is here so I'll get over and pick it up tonight or tomorrow.

Costing me appr $300.00 for the barrel then $175.00 for the brokerage/import fees/taxes...

I also have a Contender 4-Hole matte solid 416 stainless steel Stratton Custom scope base coming that is going to cost me close to $75.00 by the time it gets here at least this item can be legally shipped directly to me it is the exact same looking scope base as the MGM base that I like so much its just more expensive so more costs because MGM will no longer sell to Canadians due to the out of touch export laws.
