Loud target for 100 yard 22 shooting. About 8" diameter???
« on: December 16, 2011, 05:22:06 AM »
I tried a piece of armor plate for shooing offhand with my 22 at 100 yards, but it deadens the sound and is too heavy to move much, so I don't know if I hit or not. Can you recommend something about 8" diameter that makes noise and moves when you hit it with a 22 but doesn't get all shot up too quickly? Thanks. It's got to be circular because this is marksmanship instead of plinking.

On a serious note: What about old (really old) moon style hub caps?  Some of those old caps are really thick and tough.  At 100 yards, you might get a bullet to bounce off rather than penetrate through.  When you clank one of those, they are pretty loud.
Just a thought.
Trouble would be finding some that don't have any collector's value to them.

disks from a tractor... old ones abound.  They make a nice sound.  Works fine for a .22.

I have a rd piece of 1/2 steel I use, the trick is to have it hanging. Being stuck in the ground seems to deaden the sound. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

It sounds (pun intended) to me like someone is shooting without ear protection.  ;D Now the 22LR isn't all that loud but it will eventually get you.

OK, gentle hint about hearing aside I would also suggest an old tractor disc. The 8" diameter might be a problem though. Don't think I've ever seen one smaller than 12" but one of those should ring nicely.

Any piece of 1/4 in or thicker steel hung up so it's free to resonate will make enough sound for a 22. The harder the steel the better ring to it. One of the long range 22 matches uses propane bottles with the bottom cut out and hung up so they swing.
You might also look into the sillouette swingers by Ray Shaffer. I believe midway is selling those now. They're not cheap but they are alot of fun and will challenge your marksmanship ability.
Also google up Quality targets, they offer a good variety of precut steel targets.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

Old Skil saw (hand held circular saw) or old table saw blades or chop saw blades. Use them until the are beat up too badly and then throw them away and hang another. Be sure they hang and swing freely. using lead bullets in .22 LR at 100 yards they should last a long time....<><.... :)
