Remington 700 Muzzle loader.
« on: December 16, 2011, 09:26:41 AM »
Where can I buy a bolt take down tool for the bolt on my 2 muzzle loaders? I seen them several years ago  but failed to buy one then.

I never used a take down tool to take my bolts apart on my 700's. I just use a piece of flat iron in a vice and hook the notch in the bolt and pull back on it and slip a dime in the groove. It will then unscrew to take the bolt apart. The 700ml will gum the firing pin and in cold weather it will not fire, more so with the #11 caps. I've changed to the 209 and has not been as bad. I also leave the pin dry in extreme cold weather. My brother and myself both had ftf one morning when it was 5below0. Took them apart and they looked as if they had tare on them. Cleaned them and left dry and had no problem. Zeak

I got my dad one for his rem muzzle loader years ago. Ive always used a piece of flat steel myself on 700s. Its a good idea to clean that bolt though as it cost my dad a nice buck one year when his misfired. He took it back to camp and i pulled the bolt apart and it was about a solid mass of gunk!

Blowback. Probably the reason they quit making them.Still,if I have to shoot with bp or substitute,it's my favorite muzzleloader. But I have gone smokeless in NC.

Im sure it was blowback as thats about the only way fouling could get into the bolt.

Got lucky and found a dusty old packaged one at a local gun shop. For $10.00 came with the tool

A bottle of nitro cleaning solvent, a brass brush with a handle and a nice sized wiping rag.
My friend thinks he can make them out of some hard woods.
This tool is slick stuff beats that dime in the vice in the cold garage all day.
I only use dri slide or Remington dri lube on my bolts.
I loaded the 54cal Nov 14 2010 for deer season then with the long SE Michigasn muzzle loader season, holidays and what not I didn't get around to unloading it till Jan. 3d 2011. Minus 3F out side on the screen porch where I had left it and it went  bang with out any fan fare.
I also have found a guy who makes breech plugs for them so you can use BH209 in them. He showed me thaqt he can shoot real black in his useing that BP and after 25 fireings no blow back residue. Price was $30.00.

my dad had his converted to 209 a few years back and said it helped with the bolt fouling quite a bit.

I converted my 54 and yet today I don't think it was money well spent. the 50 is still # 11 cap powdered.

during our muzzle loader season its not uncommon for the temps to get down below zero and combine that with my fathers bullheaded prefernce for pellets instead of bulk powder caused some missfires and quite a few hangfires. The 209s took care of those problems. If you were using bulk powder especaily real black and were in warmer temps im sure it would have been a waste of time

I use Loose T 7 and the rifles stay loaded all thru the season. In 2009 I loaded the 50cal. on Nov. 14th and finally got around to fireing the charge off on Jan. 13th when the holiday dust had settled. It was Minus 3F and the CCI mag cap did what it was supposed to.
At night it stays in the screen porch. If we go out for thanks giving or Christmas dinner I put in the locked unheated honey house.
