mild 44magnum load data

im just starting my adventure of reloading and i want an easy load for my ruger super blackhawk 5.5". i know my bullets are gonna be a 250gr. keith bullet....i want be shooting past 40, maybe 50yrds at the extreme. so i want reduced recoil and about 950-1000fps, i know that will punch thru a southern deer.....is it possible?

Absolutely. I'd start with Unique or Power Pistol to achieve your goals, it should be pretty simple to do. 9.5 gr of Unique should do the trick. I'd check with the powder manufacturers web site & start development with whatever powders listed that you already have on hand.

I've been shooting 8 grains of Unique since 1979.  It's perfect.

I use 17.0 grains of 2400 for that application. I brought a lot of trophies home using it.

swampman....your load in particular interest me...hows the recoil and speed?
 
greybeard- i have some 2400 on hand....any idea on speed?

8 grains of Unique gives a little over 900 fps and very modest recoil.  It will kill most anything.

Depending on barrel length and other factors you should get around 1000 fps. We used the Thompson designed Lyman 429244 GC bullet in our loads and used it for hunting and for metallic silhouette competition.

These days I'm using the Keith bullet Lyman 429421 more. I'm using my Lipsey's Ruger BH flat top in .44 Speical more than my .44 magnums these days so my charges have been reduced due to the shorter case. I've still found no better light recoiling load than the one we used all those years ago for the .44 mangum case. For full magnum velocity 24.0 grains of H110/W296 has been my go to load for a 240 grain bullet cast or jacketed for more years than I can remember.

It's kind of funny how we're discovering that you don't need to shoot trainstopper loads for a gun to be effective. To hear some guys talk, serious deer calibers start at 454 Casull. I sold a Super Redhawk last spring at a local gun show. Several guys picked it up and lamented the fact that it was "just" a 44 magnum, and not the 454 they needed for deer.

yeah i have killed deer with standard 158gr. .357 at yardages out to 60yrds. i just wanted a lil more margin in my favor, thats why i picked up this ruger 44mag. im not big on recoil though:) the 44 isnt bad, i can shoot 100rnds of factory ammo but my accuracy isnt great esp. compared to the 357.
 
so on the few loads listed...by g.b. and swampman.if you could compare these handloads to a factory round would they recoil more or less....?

The load I listed has less recoil than any factory 240 grain load I'm aware of and less than most factory loads with lighter bullets as well.

My 44 mag 240gr full load has been 24 gr H110/296 for as long as I can remember.  I recently have been using Imr4227 and find it works well at and below max.  If you try 19.5-20 gr of IMR4227, it will put you close to the velocity you are looking for.  This is about 3-3.5 gr less than max.

2400 requires std large pistol primers. According to the manufacturer, magnum primers can cause pressure spikes and accuracy issues.
