Why I've got no Deer.
« on: December 18, 2011, 04:11:04 AM »
Pulled the game camera last night.  After only one week in a new location there were 295 photos.  That is like 15X what I would typically get from a camera at my place.  So, we downloaded the pictures from the Memory Card and the reason for the lack of deer is obvious:

Just think Land_Owner. When those pigs are born in the not very distant future, they too will be breeding at 6 months old. And so on, and so on, and so on, and so on, and so on.

Getting the little "footballs" (as Fred calls them) to come out with their Moms and Dads during daylight has been problematic.  The feeder goes off at dawn and dawn plus 30-minutes; then again at dusk minus 30-minutes and dusk.  That's four feedings daily.  The pigs show up from 8:00 PM till 2:00 AM and the turkeys and coons get the morning feedings.  How do I entice the pigs to come out in the daylight?  I have pig pipes and wallows, but they just don't show.  The woods are significantly sorrier for their presence.  The dirt is TORN UP in there.

Maybe get some welded wire pig fence panels and set up a simple trap near the feeder. Over a period of a few days you could trap out most if not all the pigs...and you could slaughter/process them as you need to.

That would take care of your hog problem right away and let the spring fawns have a better chance of survival.

Just an idea.  8)

Get a barrel mounted laser, and show up for lunch unannounced. Don't need a scope. Also for low light run a wire from a six volt battery to a flashlight bulb in a tree. You only need enough for a silhouette with a laser on the rifle. You can literally shoot them from the hip, and lasers are cheap. Hunting pressure moves pigs out of areas, no pressure assures worse infestation.
Remember when you were concerned a year or two ago why you had no pigs? Careful what you wish for.

it does sound like time for a night-time hunt.
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

4 auto feedings a day?  They are not coming out during daylight hours if they are now accustomed to coming when the feeder goes off. Night hunt sounds like a plan.

What I did was buy a few of the 3 dollar solar lights that folks use on their lawns and walk ways
I put them on feeder legs they get used to them
We also put out white sand it help in silhouette shooting
They are not real bright but you will be able to shoot

Good luck

I'd cut out out the morning feeding if it isn't helping attract hogs or deer.  Get some lights from Texas Boars.  The RGP (Red-Green Plus) don't scare the hogs but you can shoot good.  I'd set the evening feeder a bit earlier.  You may get them used to coming in earlier and giving you a better chance to shoot.  Invite friends/neighbors to hunt the entire area all on the same night.  They may move from one property to another once someone shoots into them.

Trap them like Rock suggested or if you want to hunt em do like Tommy said and use a cheap solar spot-light (much brighter than the real cheap ones and can be had for under $20), heck with all the expensive lasers, lights and night vision.

Well accually you can buy a laser for $20.00. And a mount for a little more. As far as traps, you will trap some, but then they catch on, and quit the traps. Their smarter than a dog or a coyote.
Pressure is the most likely way he is going to move them out. As long as there's a food source without pressure, their there to stay.

Shoot as many as you can in a week and you won't see any for six months. Seems to work on my place. Night vision and a green laser work wonders. Dee is right traps don't work for long if at all on some hogs.

That will never work... and by the way...were due to check those solar light's...and top off those feeders soon. ;)

To the OP....pretty solid replies....and short of changing feed times to daylight, some night hunting to get them moved to day time feeding (may as well take a few since you have them patterned) the solar light's we have up work great. Certainly bright enough to take pigs with.

Those dang things are really getting to be a problem here in NC and SC where I think you are located...

I'd try just feeding in the morning and middle of the day so when they come in at night it's all gone...Or, just stop feeding them and let them move on somewhere else...

They are having the same problems here in CA the pigs are agressive, they run the deer off and will eat the fawns.
Clearly they are staying there for the camera flash.
A flash light should not scare them.
Mount a chair on a feeder and mount a flash light to an 870 or 1100 and load up with buck.  When they come to the feeder at night let them have the flash light and then the buck shot.  I say buck as it is lethal the shot guns shoot fast and more can be done quickly and it does not carry far and a down angle will allow you to shoot and know your back stop for hte shot. Safety first.
There are a bunch of light mounts for a shotgun from expensive to just a few bucks.
You may even get a few guys to set up and hit multiple pigs as they exit your ambush.  Set it up safely so that all shots are 45 down onto trails and have an exit time where no one shoots after that time or 15 minutes after the first shot.

45-70.gov linked me with the FWC and their Gun and Night Light Nuisance Wildlife permit, which I now have in hand.  We are scheduling to get on them on the 13th & 14th.  I will be placing a light on the feeder this week to give the pigs an opportunity to become accustomed to that.  All pics are IR camera based - red flash.

My hunting partner and I put a Quarter Ton of pork in the Processor's Cooler since Christmas.
