Multiple shot slug guns
« on: December 18, 2011, 03:11:11 PM »
I own an H&R slug gun myself that is very accurate and works well. However, my Dad is looking to get a new slug gun that is accurate out to 100 yards.  The weapon he uses is an Remington 870 with smooth bore barrel that is pretty old and is not consistently accurate out to 100 yards.  He likes the H&R, but he really would like to have something like a pump, semi-auto or bolt action slug gun so he can take multiple shots when needed; plus, he wants to get a good scope for this new weapon.  Also, he wants to spend about 400 hundred on the gun and scope.

So my questions are, what are good slug guns that he can buy?  What is a good scope for this kind of weapon?  If you have any other suggestions for this, please say them.

Several nice dedicated slug guns out there now,but the $400 is the limiting kicker. How about buying pops a cantilever rifled barrel to fit the 870?You really need a cantilever or a pinned barrel if you want good accuracy in a pump or auto.I bought one (hastings) for a mossberg 500 and it shoots great.

Well if you are going for inexpensive the Maverick gets the vote ahead of the Mossberg.  Both actually made the same, just one assembled in US and one in Italy I think.  Several guys I work with use them and have had good luck with the rifles and shotguns.  ;)  Their slug gun is under $300 and you can put a good shotgun scope on it for under $100.  ;)

If he likes Remingtons look for a good used 1100 and put a rifled barrel on it. Mine groups a little better than my USH.

I just sold my sons 870 and did something I thought I'd never do....bought a Mossberg 535 combo. They have come a long way since I last shot one all those years ago. Combo was $330 with a smooth bore and a fully rifled barrel, 535 is a 3 1/2" mag. the 500 series was selling for under $300 for the combo, which is a 3" mag. It is drilled and tapped on the receiver for a scope base and despite it not having a "pinned" barrel and mount coming off the barrel, accuracy with ammo it likes is more than adequate for any deer out to the intended range of the ammo you will be shooting. While I have used Savage bolt slug rifles for years and they won't fit your budget.  I also have a Mossberg 835 turkey/deer combo with a cantilever scope mount.

It, too , is a 3-1/2" chamber.  I wanted the longer chamber for turkey and goose hunting (I've got a 28" barrel for it, too).

The recoil is really abusive with 3-1/2" shells and deer just don't need much killing so I shoot shorter slugs through it.

It shoots 2-3/4" Remington copper solids into a consistent 2" group all day long and shoots 3" ones into about a 2-1/2" groups.

At various times I've used a Bushnell red dot sight and a 2-7x32 Red Head (Bass Pro Shops store brand) turkey scope.  They both are very fast to acquire the target, are reasonably priced and have never been fazed by years of the recoil of heavy 2 ounce turkey loads or slugs.

I wish him good luck with whatever he chooses.

I second the canalevered barrel Remington or Hastings for less than $200.00.
My 870 has a cheap Bushnell dusk to dawn 1.5 x 7. It was on a Model 700 50cal muzzle loaderforalong time.

I have a Mossberg 835 Combo that shoots well also, usually about 2.5" at 100yds with ammo it likes and if I do my part.  I haven't taken a deer with it yet though so cant speak for that.  I have taken deer with my 18" Mossberg 500 12ga smoothbore though and can't complain there.  Hard to beat a .690" round ball in that smoothbore, but the slug out of the 835 rifled is much more accurate out to ranges I wouldn't even try with the 500 smooth (which I trust to 120yds).

Hmmmm...the best bet is going to be find a used 1100 then save up a little more cash to put a decent scope on it.  I've found from experience that putting a cheap scope on a 12 gauge is a waste of money.

If you go with any auto or pump you will not experinced the accuracy of a fixed bbl gun. I know because I have tried several including a Browning A-5 , several 870's , winchester 1300 and 1400 , Browning Gold and 1100. Some with Hasting bbls and others with factory bbls. If you want to learn before you buy check out Tarhunt .com. look at what they do. An 870 with a "FIXED" bbl would work well.

Another vote for a rifled cantilever barrel for his old 870.

my reasons.

1. it is hard to beat an 870

2. he is already used to the 870

3. even if other whole guns may be more accurate you stated that he wanted to shoot about 100yards well.

4. money saved by not buying another gun can be put towards the scope.

ps i have been thinking of getting a 18 inch rifled barrel for my 870 with open sites on it, it is at a local gunsmiths.

the reason i haven't yet....$$ and i want to put a scope on it, and am not sure how to do that...(i want to leave it attached to the barrel)  also i am not looking to dedicate my 870 for a slugger.

have a good one

(and i did notice that the thread was kinda old)

According to James @ Dixie slugs they get the best accuracy with a Remington rifled barrel. 2nd is an H&R rifled barrel.

IMHO it don't get no better than an 870.

Were it me I would shop for a used 870 with a cantalevered rail or a 1100.
I nearly bought a Iticha model 37 deer slayer used when I bought my 870. It was cheaper than the 870 but some one had trashed the reciver with a welded on ugly rail.

Have any of you shot or heard good things about the Savage 220F?

He already has an 870.  He can shop at some larger gun stores or pawn shops.  Sometimes they will have a used 870 slug barrel.  I picked up a Remington 1187 slug barrel used for about $100 a few years ago.  Not hardly worn, worked fine.
