anyone know about Bluesky Knives damascus on ebay?
« on: December 18, 2011, 09:46:22 PM »
I have been watching some knives on ebay and came across a bunch of damascus by bluesky knives.  Some are real pretty and there is a wide variety of designs, fixed and folders - all finshed. Prices are very moderate to very low compared to known makers of good damascus selling other places.

I queried the guy and he says he makes all his own damascus, about 267 or 297 layers.

I'm wondering what the story is.  I see a bunch of Pakistan, maybe India made damascus blanks on ebay too with similarly modest prices.

What should one look for or look out for when shopping for damascus steel knives?

thanks

"Custom Handmade" can mean a lot of things; doesn't mean he made it.  The steels used are right, but the price says India or Pakistan.  I only made one knife out of Pakistani damascus and it absolutely refused to take an edge.  Bought a knife from an English maker who used a blade by a famous Swedish maker that was in 15n20 and something else and it  took an excellent edge; although the design sucked so I gave it away.  Outside of that, I've no experience with the stuff; although its in the back of my mind to try some stamascus one of these days.  Maybe someone else has more experience with that steel type/seller

Without a doubt, the single most important thing you can do when it comes to Damascus, is to educate yourself on the source.
WHO made it?
And does that person/company have a respectable reputation?
If you're in doubt, move along.

I've experimented with damascus on numerous occasions.  Only a very few came out that I would rate "acceptable".  It is a true art to make good damascus.  IMO don't waste money on speculation...just save up and buy something reputable..you'll only need to buy once as it will last a lifetime.

Herb Derr in St. Albans W.V., make some of the best I have seen, and it's affordable.
