Been doing alittle tuning on my new( to me) 270 Model 111. I read on several sites that the reciever tang should have no stock contact to I relieved both sides of the tang of any contact from the bolt handle notch back. This had the immediate effect of eliminating her tendency to vertically string shots. Next , I adjusted the trigger( non-accu) to a nice 3 1/2lb pull and tightened up on the overtravel. The 2lb drop in pull weight DEFINATELY helped!. Before this work was done, this rifle was a rather inconsistent 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 incher for 3 at 100. Took her out today and her first 3 were 5/8 inch at 100 and groups went from there to 1 1/16 and a 5 rounder that went 1 3/8. These were Winchester 130gr Power Point factory loads. Chronoed velocity was 2980fps. Alittle less than factory , but she only has a 22 inch tube. Shot to shot variations averages 30 fps. I also tried some Remington 130 PSPCl's, but I noticed a dramatic difference in recoil and point of impact was up 3 1/4 inches compared to plus 2 inches for the Winchesters. Velocity was 2750 fps and I wonder if I got a mispackaged box of Managed Recoil loads( 115 @ 2750). Anyway, I'm having a modest amount of fun sorting this one out. I'm hoping to add better glass and a better mount son. I'm also considering a Boyds checkered walnut or grey laminate stock. Anyone use Boyds stocks? How's the fit/ finsih and wood quality? I got this rifle for a song , so I dont mind putting alittle into her.
