2011 Christmas for my Son
« on: December 20, 2011, 02:53:35 AM »
I ordered a Full length Cherrywood stock with the intent of taking a TC and refinishing it and then restocking it as a Chirstmas Gift for my son. I even posted about this in another thread. Then my Dad got involved in the project and things rapidly changed... ???

After much discussion (arguing) we decided to take an old, rough CVA that I had picked up years ago and we completely reworked all the metal and restocked it with a very nice +P Curly Maple Stock (its not as fine as my semi-custom, but DANG it looks good). The barrel has been lapped and the exterior has been rebrowned to a nice chocolate color. Together we took the lock apart, and we cleaned, polished, assembled, and tuned it. Then we took the trigger assembly apart, did a little filing to improve the fit of a few of the parts, tuned the set trigger, and finished with a nice polish job.

This gun looks so nice. Everything is crisp and clean....I cannot wait to see him open it on Christmas Eve.  8)

I think that by now everyone here knows the issues that I have with taking pictures...even when I take the camera with me. But my Daughter will be getting a new camera this year and I'm pretty sure that there will be others snapping photos.

I can't wait to see him open his gift....I can't wait to see him shoot it at the range.  8)

That would have been great...DANG.

If there were "before & after photos", I'd have bet that you'd swear they weren't the same gun.

If you would have taken before and after pics you could have written an article and sent it to Backwoodsman Magazine. I know I would enjoy an article like that and I have read your hunting story you posted here and I thought it was well written so you cleary have the talent to write...All you needed to do was hire a photographer!

We spend Christmas Eve with my folks and Christmas Day with my wife's family.

So tonight my son got his new Muzzle Loader...He was shocked; couldn't believe that it was his; and very happy all at the same time. I'll download pictures off my daughter's camera in the morning. He was very happy, and the gun is just a beatiful looking firearm.  8)

Right now we're off to bed so that Santa can make his appearance.

I hope that you all have a very Merry Christmas...

Here is my son and my dad with his new CVA Mountain Rifle.

Grandpa seems to enjoy making faces when his picture is being taken.  ???

I took some nice images of just the rifle on my sister's camera...and I have not been able to get them from her. I'll just take a few closeups with my camera. We're headed up to the cabin today and tonight...So probably won't get that done until we're back on Tuesday.

With all this snow the range is pretty boggy. We about 4 days of nice dry weather so that we can get out there and have a good time shooting...otherwise its just a muddy mess.

I'm looking forward to some nice clear weather...I need to go smell some charcoal burnin.

Last weekend my Dad, my Son & I went to the range for an afternoon of burning some charcoal. My son got to shoot his Christmas Gift for the 1st time. At 57 Yards (Range Finder) the gun was shooting 1 1/2 inch groups and was sighted in at about 1 inch high. He is so happy with that gun....very good feeling.

Once he felt good about the sighting of the gun, he spent the rest of the time banging steel gongs that varied in size from 6 inches in diamter down to 1 1/2 inches. I was impressed and proud.  8)

On Sunday we filled out our applications for Black Powder Elk Season here in Colorado. There will be 6 in our group, should we draw tags for this season....I just hope there's enough bulls in the little pocket that we'll be hunting to support a harvest of 6 bulls.

Very cool, sure would like to see some pics of the browning. I've got an older CVA Mountain Rifle headin' my way in the next couple of days, can't wait. Good luck with the drawing, I'm putting in for some tags here in Northern Nevada myself. I'd also like to share one of those glasses of wine with your pops.

Here ya go there BE Wild Willy. I saw that you ahd posted to the thread...sorry about the delay.

We put a nice patina finish on the nose piece and the capbox. The barrel came out a deep chocolate brown when we were done. The wood has a nice bit of curl to it and the final finish on the stock came out butter smooth.

She shoots well, but she tends to foul real bad after only a few shots. After only 3 or 4 shots we had to drive the last ball to seat it. I lapped the bore to burnish it real quick to get it ready for the next time that we head out to the range; then we can start seasoning the barrel and getting ready for elk in the fall.

The stuff he gets at the store is pretty tasty, he has pretty refined tastes. But I gotta tell ya, the stuff he makes at home is ambrosia... 8)
