Lyman Muzzleloaders

Im back! More questions!!...


I see alot of  threads on TCs ,CVAs and the Italian black powder guns.  Not much on Lyman's. Can you guys tell me if the Lyman's are as good? Are they a durable firearm? Accuracy wise.... As good ? I have a guy who's local  that has a 54 that he wants to sell....

Lyman is made by Investarms.
Investarms is the Italian guns.
Available guns by this maker are Investarms, Lyman and some Cabelas models.
 That said, they are a fine gun, reliable with parts for conversion, repair and upgrade widely available. With proper load development they are/can be extremely accurate.
What model does this Gent have for sale? Great Plains? Deer Stalker? Trade Rifle?
(.54 is a favorite of mine)

I have had some great experiences with the Lyman Great Plains Rifle...with that being said, the Lyman GPR is a great product. Call a semi-custom gun maker and ask for a good copy of Hawken Rifle and they will most likely advise you to save your money and go buy a Lyman GPR. The Lyman GPR is a very fine replica of the Hawken and again a quality product...
 
I have even more experience with the Lyman Trade Rifle...and again in my opinion it is a very fine product. Accuracy is very good with the Trade Rifle and the .54 calibre is great elk medicine.

As I recall...the Deerstalker is like the Trade Rifle, but has a rifling twist that is designed to be accurate with Conical Bullets...as apposed to Round Balls.
 
Does that sound right to you guys??

I have a deerstalker 54 flintlock and have good results with patched roundballs at 75 yrds.  It has a 1:48 twist. I use 80 - 85 grains of FFg and Hornady 54 cal balls and TC pre-lubed patches.

I have a TC Hawken in .54 with the 1:48 twist and wanted a slower twist gun in the same caliber. Lyman was the only other popular maker with what I wanted so I got me a GPR kit and just love it!!!  1:60 twist with 60 to 110grs of Goex ffg and my hand cast round balls, hornets nest  and lubed patch and this baby will punch holes at 50, 75 & 100yds with very respectable groups as long as I do my part ;)
If your buddy is selling at a decent price I grab it!!!!  Its a .54, what more do you need :D  Someday I'll give the Deerstalker a go...........just not yet a smy GPR is shooting like an absolute dream!

My Lyman Trade Rifle in .54 has been rugged and reliable.  I did change out the rear sight to an adjustable one but is still period looking. I got that site from The Log cabin Shop.  Have fun!!

The Lyman Deerstalker is a great MZ. I have one in .54 caliber, and it is hands down the most accurate percussion sidelock I own, and that means it beats all of my many T/C models. It shoots a .530 roundball, with .018" pillow ticking patch, with 90 grains Goex FFG with great accuracy. I did put a Lyman 57SML peep sight on it, as I did not care for the leaf style rear sight that it comes with, but that's just my personal preference. You will not go wrong with one of these MZ.

I shot mine today and broke my rear sight. My question does anyone here have the Lyman rear tang peep? Do you like it ??
