Dear Guys,

Has anyone ever built a bolt action rifle in the new "umpteen-ought-ump" caliber?

I've heard that the shell holds a full grain of powder more, and travels 25 feet per second faster at 400 yards, than the old "umpteen-ought-oomp" caliber.

In real world terms, this tranlates into 9 feet of extra range at 400 yards, and 4 foot pounds of extra power!

I think it would be just the thing for Rocky Montain Elk and Texas Mulies.

I just gotta have one!

Wow Willy, I'm floored. If what you say about the ackley version is true, then that would mean the new cartridge comes within a hair's breadth of the classic Hoopla H&H, which everyone knows was used by Dr. Seuss to kill 10,000 elephants in Botswana in 1905. All of that with almost a half pound less recoil!

Who says there's no room for new cartridges!

I'm gonna sell all of my Remington SAUMs and RUMs to get one! They are old hat now.

Course, it's winter and my wife is screaming that I gotta buy my little girl a new pair of shoes, but these kids have got to learn to put a piece of stiff cardboard in the bottom and cowboy up. It's only snow for god's sake, not molten lava!

I had one built by Screw Up gun works. Kicked like crazy and was not very accurate. Save your money. Didn't keep it very long.

sadly no, I have not gone to the new super-ultra whizbang calibers, It appears I am woefully behind the times. my main battery consists of 30-30, 270 win, and 35 whelen. the newest of these was introduced over 85 years ago.(yes, I know the whelen was only legitimized in the 80's but its been around since 1922 so it still counts as an octogenarian)
for all the decrepitude I have never felt under-gunned and certainly no game animal Ive shot has ran away laughing at my puny old cartridges, they all generally just lay down and die right there If I do my part and put the bullet in the right place.
given unlimited funds and time for load development I would like to try em all, but since ed McMahon passed away he isnt likely to be showing up at my door to fund such a plan so my oldies and I continue on harvesting game every year in spite of our advancing age.

I have no qualms about shooting a a whitetail with a 130 grain bullet out of a 270 moving at a measly 2900fps I have never said " huh if that bullet had been moving another 400 fps faster that deer would have died a whole lot quicker," just doesnt work that way.
given that I dont take shots much past 300 yards with any weapon anymore I think Im good for a while yet with either the whelen or the 270 and I try to get a lot closer than that like 100 yards or less so my 30-30 would actually cover most of my needs

I had been thinking about the newfangled 45-70 as a replacement for my 50-70 and now you tell me about the "umpteen-ought-ump" cartridge! Is it chambered in a Trapdoor? I am not real familiar with the bolt action thing you're talking about.

manny, just read the review on the new umpty ought ump in Tacticool Living ... man, I'm drooling. I'm going to get an upper in it for my Bushmaster. I heard on the internet that the military is going to convert their sidearm to that caliber, so I figure to jump in early so I can take advantage of the flood of ammo that'll be coming. I've got an awesome Norinco reflex sight all ready to put on it when it comes.

But before I order the upper, which twist rate would you recommend for heavy cast bullets? I'm getting a 14" barrel with a 2.5" flashhider permanently welded on.

Forgot to tell you. The twist rate is 1 in 1. So, you have to make your own barrel. Or, you can get one from Brownell's for just $5,000.

The good news is they really stabilize those 235.893 grain hard cast bullets, but instead of adding antimony, ya have to add silver.

And yes, I got it straight from a Special Forces guy, who heard it from a SEAL, who heard it from a CIA Op, that the military is converting all ARs to this caliber, and that NATO has secretly approved it. Just think, a single caliber for world wide combat!

All of the gun magazines are going to feature articles about it next month, and there will be ten glossy print ads of the new round and rifles, featuring scantily clad Asian women in black evening gowns., And best of all, the Hell-Fire trigger system will soon be available for it! Sell all of your other rifles now! You won't need them after this!

The silver alloy is for civilian use. Military will be using Depleted Uranium rounds. Got an old buddy who works in weapons procurement at the pentagon who says they will be hard to find on the open market. That's a deal breaker for me, without the DU it's just a heavy Stoner direct impingement design, meh.
