SB-1 .44 Magnum (picture added)
« on: December 20, 2011, 11:23:00 AM »
A local pawn shop has a newer .44 Magnum SB1 for $175.00.  Should I buy it or just spent the money for a new one?

You can get a brand new one for about $230.00.  It's in pretty nice shape.

Way cool, I just ordered one through Gander Mountain store  priced at $250 but with my reward certs. and gift card in hand cut the price to  $147, I want to cut the 22 inch barrel down but I can't decide how short to go. Any thoughts on it would be appreciated.

They already seem pretty short.  I guess if I was gonna cut one down it would be as short as I legally could.

18" is plenty long, and 16.5 would probably work as well, just remember to leave enough for muzzle work, crowning etc. Those Talo's are 18.5 I think, and they are sure sweeties!!

Good deal Swampy!!

I agree. Hack it off at 18" or so and true it and go shoot it a bit. See how it handles and how you like it. If good have a nice crown put on it ot do it yourself. If not, prune again and then crown it.  It will shoot OK enough with no crown, as long as its square. All you want to see is how it handles not accuracy. Accuracy will be there once crowned. ;)

I used my 45-70 most of the time this year and really missed the short barrels of my 454 and maxi in the blinds. I an going back to the shorties for SURE!!

I mounted a 2-7X32 Nikon Prostaff on it this morning that I had laying around.  I had a set of mediun Weaver Tip-offs in my sack of scope rings and a NEF black nylon sling finished it off.  I'll try to post pics soon.

H&R 44mags are 1:38", late 444 Marlin H&Rs are 1:20".
