Euro skulls done

 Feller in town did my skulls $75 each. One from 08(profile pic) and this years buck. Did an awesome job. Pics do not do justice. Top one is this years, and bottom is my 08 deer.

My Dad has a nice 8pt out to the taxidermist at present. $40, waiting to see how it tuns out. I have 3 or 4 in the freezer on standby.

  They look great! We did one at my parent's house a few years back. Cabelas sells the VanDyke kit and we boiled it over a propane heater used for frying turkeys. Wasn't all that hard.

 That is a good price. I skinned out the 08 but I loose intrest real quick. I know this some work envolved. I would pay it again especially after seeing how well they came out. It was worth the money just to not have to smell them boiling

i did one last year for my son. after skinning the head out i just left it set in a tub of water, when the water got stinky i changed it.left it for maybe a month or so, then wired it to a post and pressure washed it.made a nice sanded and stained red oak board to put it on.turned out great and he loved it.

You started it Dinny.  You might want to take a closer look at Lonny's pics.  Would appear he laid these critters on his pillow on his bed to take photos.      Godfather flashbacks!   


On the serious side though, been trying to find a video I once saw with a guy doing this same type mount by using something like a buffing pad on a bench grinder to strip the exterior of the skull.  Don't remember how he went about the inside but the whole process took very little time at all.  I'll keep looking.

I have done a couple myself and a few things that concerned me;
First when boiling, the skull turns slightly yellow from the fat that is melted from the boiling process,
The brains are a pain in that most of them should be removed before the boil - Stick a bent coat hanger, bent hook on end, attached to a drill and churn everything up as best you can and then flush with some pressurized water.
Have been considering using a hole saw to open up the spinal cord channel for better access.
and lastly, be careful and don't boil too hard or too long or you will end up with the small bones at the nose to come apart or fall off.


These are the main reasons I can't wait to see the carrion beetles work.

Just an FYI, the use of carrion or demestered beetles are how mounts like this are made at most museums.  I would expect them to turn out quite well.

Went and had my skulls put on plaques. I am very very happy. He has several kinds of woods and couple different plaque styles. So I took the skulls back and he mounted them on cherry plaques for me. Total for cleaning and mounting and plaques? $100 each. Merry Christmas to me

 The mounted photos are on a hallway wall. This spring they get to move to the livingroom wall. After we do some work(so I am told)
