I grieve for the girls family.

Two observations I have about the story.  The AP has demonstrated its ignorance once more by saying the man was cleaning his gun, The man discharging the gun demonstrated very poor gun handling by firing a shot into the air.

As a side note, yes it is entirely possible for a muzzleloader to shoot that far, the .45-70 loaded with black powder and a 405 grain bullet fired from a trapdoor Springfield accurately hit targets at 1.5 miles, and penetrated 6 pine boards

I suspect he was discharging it in order to clean it.  It's still pretty stupid.

My condolences to her family, quite a tragedy.
It makes me wonder how many iraqi or afghani people are killed this way with so many idiots firing thier AK's up in the air like they do ::)

Very grim, and the guy who discharged the round is responsible. Still - what are the chances? But there it is.

Very sad.
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

A very sad story. Hopefully all who read it will not make such a foolish shot in the future. How many time have we heard or read - discharge a ML into soft dirt if you need to fire it to unload it ?
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Some people just lack simple common sense. I feel for the family and the the man for what responibility he must feel. Something he will have to live with. It just makes no sense to discharge any firearm in that manner.

I understand discharging the gun to clean it , but firing it in the air is just irresponsible.

Looks like this is now being treated as a homicide.

http://news.yahoo.com/ohio-shooting-girl-amish-buggy-homicide-141657408.html

FREDERICKSBURG, Ohio (AP) — The fatal shooting of a 15-year-old Amish girl who was driving a horse-drawn buggy in northeast Ohio has been ruled a homicide, a medical examiner said Tuesday.
Rachel Yoder was shot in the head Thursday night while traveling from a party to her home in Wayne County, between Columbus and Akron. She died Friday from the wound, Summit County Medical Examiner Lisa Kohler said.
Wayne County sheriff's Capt. Douglas Hunter said Tuesday that there had been no arrests. Authorities first thought Yoder may have fallen from the buggy and hit her head, The Cochocton Tribune reported.
The teen was shot while riding alone and returning from a Christmas party for employees, most under 18 years old, who work at an Amish produce farm, Hunter said. He said his department found a trail of blood along the road and traced it about three-eighths of a mile into Holmes County in an area of farms and rolling hills.
The Holmes County sheriff's department then took the lead on the case.
"Here is a 15-year-old girl, minding her own business, who is victimized," Holmes County Sheriff Timothy Zimmerly told The (Wooster) Daily Record. "It's an isolated incident and we don't know the motive. What more can you do?"
The Associated Press left a message Tuesday at Zimmerly's office seeking further comment.
Yoder was born in nearby Mount Eaton and attended the Old Order Amish Church, The Daily Record said. She is survived by her father, 10 brothers and sisters, 26 nieces and nephews and two grandparents.
Hunter said there was no indication the shooting was related to a rash of beard-cutting attacks against Amish men in a feud over church discipline. Seven Amish men have been charged with hate crimes in the attacks stretching from Holmes County to three other counties in northeast Ohio.
Arlene Miller, the wife of an Amish bishop who was a victim of the beard attacks, said Tuesday there was no talk in the Amish community about those cases being connected to the girl's shooting.
Gun violence in Amish communities is rare but not unheard of. A man shot 10 schoolgirls, killing five, inside a one-room schoolhouse five years ago in Nickel Mines, Pa. The Amish were praised for their forgiveness after the shooting and reaching out to comfort the gunman's widow

It's still under investigation, waiting on the ballistics report.

Amish girl's death appears accidental, sheriff says
The shooting death of a 15-year-old Amish girl in east-central Ohio last week is likely to be ruled an accident, Holmes County Sheriff Timothy Zimmerly said on Tuesday.

Racher Yoder, 15, was shot while inside a horse-drawn buggy on her way home.

It appears she was struck by a stray bullet, Zimmerly said. A neighbor told authorities he fired his weapon while cleaning it, and the sheriff believes that bullet hit the girl.

Still, an official ruling is pending the results of a ballistics report, Zimmerly said.

No charges have been filed.

CNN affiliate WOIO reported that Yoder was on her way back from a Christmas party when she was shot. She managed to stay in the buggy until it neared her home, at which point she fell out, WOIO said. The victim's brother found Yoder on the ground, it said.

She was transferred to Akron City Hospital and died Friday afternoon, the network reported.

That was absolutely no accident.  It was negligent homicide at the least.  Shooting in the air to empty a gun? In an area of farms and roads all around.  The idiot should be tried and spend a few years in the state hotel just for stupidity.  In many states it is civil trespassing just to shoot across another person's property line without consent of the owner.

Maybe my outrage is in part because my father was a state firearms safety instructor. It is the absolute duty of the shooter to be certain of his backstop.   Such thoughtless behavior should be criminal.  It would be in Pennsylvania.

I believe Ky calls it negligent manslaughter, other than that the police investigate and give their findings to the attorneys (State, county, etc.) for them to determine if it ever goes to court. (This is where the good ole boys club comes in)

I agree with your outrage, I was taught that when you pull the trigger you own the shot and everything that goes with it.
