« on: December 21, 2011, 04:04:41 PM »
Hello, new guy here....thought i'd say howdy...i got some Academy gift cards for early Christmas presents....thinking i'm gonna get a handi-rifle....i have other rifles in various calibers for deer/hogs....but i want to add a handirifle to the my collection..i have owned a 20 gauge H&R for nearly 30 years...it's a great shotgun till this day....but after 30 yrs i want a H&R rifle.....but for the life of me i can't decide what caliber i want...ha....thought about the 45-70 as i've never owned one.....also thinking about 223 as it may be good for my kids to learn on...can anyone tell me the twist rate on the 223?
thanks

Welcome!  1-9 twist on a new gun. Older varied by year and you can find years listed in the FAQ sticky.  thejanitor

Sound like you have large caliber rifles. Maybe you want to look at a HMR17 rimfire.
Low recoil, muzzle blast and extremely accurate out to 150 yards.
Great for all varmits fox sized and under. Too much for squirrels, rabbits as they will disintergrate

thanks for the replies ....the hmr17 is a fast shootin' little round...would be good for kids to learn on also...but i figured i'd start them on my 22 lr and work up to a 223 maybe afterwards

If you dont reload, I wouldnt suggest a 45-70 it will break you paying to shoot it, that being said my 45-70 is my favorite one. I had a buffalo classic and sold it before I got the stuff to reload the caliber.

I can reload...that is why the 45-70 cost doesn't worry me much...i've priced the boxes in the stores and it does get a little steep !

Everything in the store is a little steep if you don't load.  ;)  Welcome Sandman.  My Buffalo Classic loves 350 gr Hornady Flat points, 300 gr Hornady HP and the 325 gr FTX's.  Heard good things about the 405gr Remmy too, but don't use it personally.  I use exclusively Reloader7 or BP to load with.  Make sure you read the FAQ as much you might want to know has been documented there.  ;)

If you reload and it is versatility you want, I would get anything in .30 caliber- 30'06, .308, .30-30.  You should have no problem loading them down for the young 'uns.  You can even get sabots and shoot .22 cal. bullets out of them.

If it is mainly for the kids it would be a .357 Mag, .44 Mag, or .45 colt.  (although I don't think the .45 is available any longer except in the Buffalo Classic.)

I'm new to Handis myself having bought my first one this past summer. Got it to shoot up my remaining Trapdoor carbine loads on hand and to check out the rifle itself. I liked it from the first time out. So far all I've used in it are the carbine loads and everyone who shoots it likes it better than that old Springfield. No reason for me to load it up. If I want to really thump something I've got the 577 Sniders.
I have my eyes on the .223 Handi next along with a couple of others as finances permit. I'm not going to wait 30 years because I probably haven't got that much time left! :) Besides, I have a case of 223, dies, components, but no more vehicles to launch from.
Whichever caliber you decide on I'm sure you'll be happy with it. Happy enough to buy another so it may not matter which one you get first.

Everyone should own a .45-70.

I agre, and a 30-30 and a 357 Handi!!

Thats my suggestion, a 357 mag!  Then chamber to maximum. THEN you will have it all!!

The kids learn on the 38 Spls (Very lo noise and recoil is non existant) step up to the mags and hunt with mags and maximums! Read the FAQ's and you will be in the know about the maxi!!!

Just like CW says  357!
The only thing wrong with it is that it fills the place of 3 rifles (38spl,357, 357 Max) leaving additional space in the gun rack for more Handis ;D

The 357 is about as good for kids to use as you can get, and I would look for the little trapper models, they are so short and easy to handle. I have one for my grandson who is now in his 3rd year moving up to a 30/30, it is on a youth stock, but not the trapper barrel, it was not available then.

Another vote for the .357. You can load it up with some super light .38 rechamber and load it up with some heavy .357 Maxi. You said you have big guns. So the logical choice would be the .357 ;D
