BPCR Loads for Original Trapdoor Carbine???
« on: December 22, 2011, 05:42:53 AM »
I have some black powder cartridge reloads that I use in my Trapdoor rifle, but they seemed a little too stout for my carbine. I am using a 405 gr. RNFP bullet and 65 grs. of BP. I can remember reading that this was a little too heavy for the short carbines and the government down sized the powder charge. I can't remember what the charge was, can someone help me?

If I down size the charge, I will have to use some form of filler I suppose. I know some of my CAS parts use Cream of wheat, but a friend said there is something much better. If so where can I get some of this stuff?

The early carbine load was 55 grs of 1f powder under the 405 gr bullet (well it actually weighs 385...) they later left that when the infantry round went to the 500 gr bullet and used the 70 gr load for everybody.
You may not need any filler under your 405 gr bullet if you use 1f powder, but if you do cork wads would be your best bet to fill the space. Same with 2f, but 2f may foul heavier than the 1f.
The old books such as Sharps and Remington's catalog cautioned against using "to fine" of a powder as fouling would go up.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

I used a lube wad .3 thick to help with my wife's load of 50 grains of 2f and a 320 grain bullet.

Thanks for the response guys.  Right now I am using 2f Goex and a fiber wad for my rifle loads.  Don't have any cork wads so will go with the cream of wheat and 55 grs. for the carbine.

“This book gives extensive load information for the original trapdoor Springfield. Detailed loading data, maintenance and restoration, including information enabling you to reproduce original loadings. Many people are reporting 2 MOA groups and less. Much of the info has been applied to other calibers and guns with some very impressive results. Contains issue loads for the 45-70 Springfield, as well as information on trajectory, sight use, bore cleaning etc. Soft bound, 176 pages, 6" x 9".” US $29.95
