It is most likely already drilled and tapped for a Lyman peep. Also check out Warren Customs for the Winchester One Hole Sight. It replaces the rear sight that is dovetailed in. About a 10 minute install.

Winchester 9422's were never factory D/T'd or prepped on either the receiver or the tang for any kind of peep sight.

Williams Gun Sight Co (WGRS-54), New England Custom Gun (NECG-Grooved 22), and Skinner Sights, all make "clip-on" receiver peep sights that utilize the receiver's scope mount grooves, AND require a front sight blade taller thasn issue, in order to zero the rifle - a good chance to switch the front sight bead to another type (Gold, Ivory, Fiber Optic, etc) that may be more to your liking than the 9422's issue style.

This is my 9422 with the NECG sight

Rangr,  The Williams in your picture looks awful tall. Did you do any research to see if the other makers made sights that were nearer the bore. I have a tiny little Marlin auto the I would like to put a peeper on, but I would hate to put an ungainly front on this cute little gun.

Another option would be a Skinner dovetail mount barrel peep or the Marbles Bullseye sight.

Both fit in the factory barrel dovetail and from what I've heard will "usually" work with the factory front sight.

The receiver peep on my 9422 is from NECG, not Williams.

The C/L of the peep aperture of both are very close to being equal/even.

While a Williams side-mount peep's aperture would certainly be lower, the receiver would need to be D/T'd for the base, and the base hangs off/extends off to the left side of the receiver.

There are two very low profile receiver peep sights that could be mounted, the Williams WM-96 and the Skinner LoPro - but both would requiring a mounting hole be D/T's atop the receiver to accept them.

This is the WM-96:
