Taurus Tracker 44 Mag strength?
« on: December 22, 2011, 01:57:50 PM »
I know it's not as strong as a single action Ruger,Freedom Arms but how does it handle heavy loads.  I noticed some disclaimers on the heavy buffalo bore stuff and a couple others.  I don't plan on purchasing the stuff as it is a bit rich for my blood but was just wondering how it would handle it.  I didn't see anything specifically listing the Taurus Tracker but it made me wonder where it lies on the strength chart?

In the Taurus manual it list the .44 mag at a 240 grain bullet running  1350 fps. The 5 shot cylinder is a little short for the oal of some rounds. I own and have owned 44 mags in a lot of different revolvers over the years. The Tracker is a smaller frame gun than the Rugers and Smiths. I own a couple of the Trackers in 44 mag and love them for what I bought and use them for. Have killed deer with them, one is scoped one is open sights. Both shoot very good groups. I have 240 grain loads in them and backed down to 210 grain loads. I love the guns but do not believe they could stand a diet of the heaver loads over a long period of time. I had a Smith model 29 rebuilt 3 times before retiring it to 44 special loads. A Ruger Redhawk replaced it and has never gave a problem with heaver loads. I have a Raging Bull in 454 that I love and if I wanted a Taurus in 44 mag to shoot a heavy load in I would get a Raging Bull in 44. I am not knocking the Tracker, love mine, bought them in several different calibers and all have been extremely accurate. Have had friends that bought them that sucked? I would not shoot anything out of mine heaver than factory. Yes they could probably handle it, but doubt it would help the life of the gun.

I think trying to pigeon hole guns and compare them to others to decide what the strength level of them is just isn't productive. There are no hard and fast answers to such questions. To get the answers would require stressing to failure a significant number of each gun from each manufacturer and when you were done destroying them I'm not sure you'd really know then.

Suffice to say that any factory load that does not exceed SAAMI specs is safe in your gun. Some loads by smaller boutique companies like Buffalo Bore, COR-BON and the like might be too long to fit and might also not be within SAAMI specs. Stick to loads from the major ammo makers and for reloads those in loading manuals from the bullet and powder manufacturers and you'll be fine.

Old Redneck, I'm wondering if you've fired your Tracker much in double action mode? I've owned several Taurus revolvers in the past which were prone to misfire in double action due to light primer strikes. I have been seriously considering getting a Tracker .44 mag to replace both my Ruger .44 mag and my 3" Bulldog .44 special. I'd run nothing heavier than upper level .44 special loads as I find anything more to be neither needed nor pleasant to shoot. So I'm not worried about the strength but I do want dependable double action capability.

I bought the Trackers in 44mag and 45 acp. The trigger pull in double action on all of them is extremely heavy. The Raging series guns in 454, 22hornet,218bee, etc had a heavy but much smoother trigger pull. I do not like to cut or replace springs in them because of the light firing pin strike issue. Taurus uses a different angle or something in the Tracker verse Smiths model 19 that makes the leverage of the trigger different. With the side plates off looking at both guns you can see it. I was always told they were the same but they look different to me and the smith that was showing it to me. He said it was why you get misfires out of them when you lighten springs. You can smooth up the gritty feeling, and with light loads and Federal primers may get away with it. I personally shoot very little double action and other than smoothing some leave them alone. For what they are and the cost I love mine. They are extremely accurate, to the point the Taurus shoots better groups at 100 yards than my custom shop Smith. I do not believe the smaller frame Taurus will have the same useable life with full factory loads the Smith will have. Years ago I was one of the load to the max guys and can tell you from experience you can shoot a Smith loose with enough heavy loads. I will be kinder to the Taurus and hope to get several years out of them.
