primer choices?

im new to reloading and want to stock up on components....i will be loading .357mag and 44mag only. the loads i will work up will be for hunting and target practice. i have narrowed my powder down to unique. so now i need to get some primers....i know i will need small pistol and large pistol. im looking at the winchester primers "standard"...they list them as good for standard and magnum loads. are these reliable? just want to know before i go and buy 1000:)

I use both cci and winchester primers, have found no reliability issues with either brand over the last 50 years.

since you have settled on unique in both calibers..you will do just fine with the standard primers.

For reference, the powder manufacturers make specific recommendations about which primer to use with their powders. The powder manufacturers always win all ties in my opinion.

I've been using Winchester LP/SP almost exclusively for the past 20 yrs or so. I have had no problems or issues. I'm using Wolf primers in my pistol calibers currently, at least until I use up the 15k or so I have on hand. I've had a few misfires with those. (very few)

Any maker can produce a bad cap or two per million but you can be sure that any American or west European made primers are very good.

I used a couple of hundred Winchester primers and they were fine. I typically use CCI but they weren't available so I went with Winchester and had no issues.

I agree.
 
Winchester s will be fine and a STD primer is all thats needed.
 
Personally Winchester is the least used by me. But not because there is anything wrong with it! I use CCI the most followed by Remington and Federals then Winchesters.
 
Unique is a good powder, but dont limit yourself!!  There are many great powders out there!!!
