I've been an NRA member for many years. I believe in most of what the NRA does save 1 thing. Like many of you I donate on a somewhat regular basis. What doesn't set well with me is the gifts or rewards for making some of those donations. It angers me to open the package and find "Made in China" on most of the crap they send out. They want Americans to send donations but don't support the American worker. I also donate to several other pro gun organizations but the NRA still seems to have the loudest voice. Any thoughts?

You are going to hear from both sides on this one lol! I'm not a big fan of the NRA. I was a member for many years, but have found the GOA fit's my style better. I think gun owners can do more for the second A, if they stay on their Reps. about the rights under it.

The GOA sends me post cards with a pre-written message to send to the House and Senate when an important piece of legislation comes up. I pass them out to friends who don't use the internet. I contact my Rep's by email, and sometimes get a real reply I think we owe it to ourselves, children and Grandchildren to do so.

If you like outdoor magazines that looks more like an advertising rag , with a subscription, then the GOA is not for you.I believe they spend what little they get from me in a better way, but again...."JMO"

They're trying to get the most "bang" for their buck, in this economy.  Imagine sending out US made items, what would the threshold be to get a free gift?  Instead of membership extensions for $55 (2 years) - for a coffee mug set, $75 (3 years) - NRA Tac Knife, and $100 (5 years) - NRA flashlight, how many people do you think would pay $65, $85, and $125 (just my best guess) to renew?

I agree with your point, maybe the NA could just ask you to renew without sending gifts.  Before I became a patron member, I sent them small contributions, and asked them not to send me the free gift.  You could also do the same.

Go to your local shooting range or gun store. How many guns are made in China, Italy, Japan, Russia how about the Turkish made Remingtons. Piles of old Russian Military rifles and stacks of Russian ammo. Americans are spending millions on this off shore armament.  Scopes and Binocs and all the hunting cloths and boots are made in China. That bag of Jerky in your pocket made in Argentina. I see more Toyotas and Hondas in the hills every year. These are all powered by fuel from Canada.
 
Yes you are right that Damn NRA bought some Coffee Cups from China. That is a Damn good reason to not support them.

I survive on social security and can't afford to contribute anything more than my basic membership. I would like to think some portion of that membership fee goes toward doing some good for the 2nd amendment. However they waste more than that on mailing me requests for money I don't have. I have written and asked that they not send me that junk mail but it isn't the NRA who does it, the "fund raising" is contracted out to a fund raising organization. So whatever you contribute first goes to cover the cost of the fund raising and only the "left overs" actually go to the NRA. So I have not renewed my membership and I figure both I and the NRA come out ahead that way.

Keep in mind that the lobbying they do on behalf of gun owners across the country is only a part of what they do. None of the other "gun rights" orginizations sponsor shoots, offer shooting training programs for civilian and law enforcement alike, or sponsor gun shows across the country.
 If you really don't like the way the NRA is being run then convert your membership from annual member to Life member and get busy making the changes you think necessary in the orginization.

I get tired of the NRA telemarketers calling. I am on the no call list yet they seem to call at least once a week. I have asked several times to be removed. But they say I am a lifetime member so they can't take me out of the system. I am about to tell them to shove it and cancel my membership if that will keep them from waking me up.

I am a life member as well. I never get calls. I called them, and they removed me from there list. Not one call in over 3 years.  But would I drop them because of the calls.. Heck no!

I didn't leave the NRA because they called all the time, left them for other reasons, but they called all the time for a couple years after I left them.  After the last call...they won't be calling back.  They wanted a donation because the UN was going to outlaw my guns...I told them the UN can't outlaw my guns, they are the UN and I'm not part of that. I told them only our congress could do that.  Then I asked them how much money they needed to bribe our senators to not outlaw my guns, and why would you give them money for a vote..why not vote them out of office instead of giving them bribes? ...after that the caller got the manager, I went a couple rounds with him and it's now over...forever I hope.
Imagine that..telling me the UN was going to outlaw my guns...unless I gave some money.  I've heard it all now. Obviously I must not have given them enough money over the past 35 years to keep them from supporting the legislation that could take all my sons guns away from him if some bureaucrat in some office thinks he has post war syndrome whatever.
Anyway, this thread could get carried away ...almost did it myself!

This can stop the movement of small arms on the world markets.  Most of our firearms come from over seas and American Arms companies need this market. Yes, this would in effect over ride the 2nd. This would also stop citizens from transporting small arms in regular commerce.  Please read and listen before you attack your fellow gun owners the NRA.

sidewinder319, I don't think people have a clue what they are talking about. Some are just ignorant of the facts. Thanks for pointing out about the UN treaty.  Indeed if Congress voted it through, and the President signed it, it would over ride the Second Amendment.  Also to the poster above sidewinder319, the money is not used for bribes, it is used for lawsuits.

What the representative from the NRA told me on the phone was bogus...the UN outlawing my guns...They are too far away to outlaw "my" guns".   
 
I don't have anything to feel bad about here, I supported the NRA close to 30+ years.  I might again if they make an effort to reverse some anti gun legislation they supported...guess that's up to them.
 
Again, I attacked no fellow gun owners, that was made up. And yes...Senators get bribes from the NRA...I can't help that...it's just one of those things that happen.  Not just by the NRA...so maybe that helps...some.
 
Also, I don't talk about the NRA much or go out of my way to put them down, but this seems like a good place to tell it like it is...so sometimes I do.

I wish the NRA would keep the trinkets and use the money to fight with. That said they do things I either don't like or don't understand sometimes. But they are the biggest organization fighting for gun rights. I will support them until some other group steps up with the same ablity and money to fight.

Nothing was said about the destruction of anyone.  And yes it is a fact if you attack you can expect a reprisal. The Anti-NRA Union Propaganda and DNC pro Obama bunch is attacking gun owner.  I am sure from your post you are backing Mayor Bloombergs call to restrict the power of the NRA.  I can tell you this It won't work.

jimster - Unfortunately what sidewinder319 said has some truth to it.  The UN has been trying to pass a treaty to regulate the sale of small arms throughout the world, including the US.

When John Bolton was the ambassador to the UN for the US (under Pres. Bush), he stated that the US would not support any such treaty which infringed on the rights of Americans (to own guns).  Sec of State H. Clinton has no such qualms.  If the UN treaty is accepted by the US, and ratified by Congress, Americans would have to comply with this treaty which would become the law of the land (The US).  I ask that you really research this before you so casually dismiss something that could so profoundly affect your right to own firearms.

They are too far away to take my guns.  Where in the Hell do you think the U.N. is located?  It has its world HQs in New York City. I can not imagine you ever belonged to the NRA.  Most NRA members are well informed on their right to keep and bear arms.  The U.N. move to Embargo Small Arms  has been on the list of needed bills by the Democrats and their supporters for years. Where were you when President Bush and Sec. Bolton caught all the Hell from Democrats for saying Hell No.  The left then as now came out hard against the NRA. Ah maybe you do remember?
