mold on leather breeches
« on: December 23, 2011, 04:00:02 PM »
Anybody know how to prevent mold from getting started on dried green beans? Had a jar full got moldy on the bottom. Didn't notice till now.
Is there anything that can be put with it in a container? Haven't done green beans this way for long term storage before, so do I need to store them in a sack instead of a jar or plastic bag? No bugs, just mold.

I pack all flour in buckets and slowly fill from the bottom with C02 till a match goes out at rim level. Nothing grows without oxygen.

I may be mistaken but I think the major ammount of methane production is by anerobic activity. ear

I cannot work out  the connection between "Mold on leather breeches" and  Cornbelt's dried green beans ??? .I thought maybe I had a few too many new year celebratory rums .hic , but then  the thread switches to  Co2  & Methane  ! What the------ . are you boys drinkin ? ;D
Make sure the beans are properly dried out before sealing in any container . A small sachet of silica-gel (moisture absorbent crystals) may help to take up any excess. NO MOISTURE NO MOLD.
Removing mold from your leather britches is a nother kettle of fish entirely. Two thing my old Mum used to remove mold are , vinegar or oil of cloves. Oil of cloves does a better job but vinegar is more common.
Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2012 . and hoping some of our countries leaders can find some "backbone"to meet the challenges facing us all in the coming year.
    Cheers Gaz.

The only mold was in a jar. The zip-lock bags weren't bothered. They were "sorta" vacume sealed (lung power). The jar was  on top of the refrigerator, and no doubt got the rising heat, so with any moisture made it mold, at least that's what I'm thinking at this point. They probably could have been dryer.
Next year we'll put all that in the equation. Have plenty of dessicant. Just didn't think of it for green beans.
