Case splitting question 22mag
« on: December 23, 2011, 04:47:15 PM »
Hey I have a question[/size]I took my daughter today and we were shooting a 22mag revolver and we were shooting Winchester Dynapoint 22mag ammo. I have never seen this but I had a handful of the brass cases that split long ways along the cylinder of the case.Has anyone had this experiance? Why does it happen? Also shot some Fiocchi but didnt have that problemThanks Hank

First, check this before going further:

Other possibilities---

I've seen that happen with old cartridges not stored under ideal conditions. The brass gets brittle with both age and the corrosive effects of the propellant setting against the brass for long periods of time.

What type of revolver? Did they always split in the same chamber(s)? Generous chambers can result in splits sometimes if the cartridges are made with harder brass than others.

A bad batch of ammo. Many years ago I experienced splits with Remington 22LR. Never had the problem before nor after and I still have that Single Six.

I would examine all chambers carefully for any issues, size, marks the splits may be leaving to make sure there is no danger to you or the gun. Try a new box of ammo and if they still split find a new brand with all the stuff out there you should be able to find something else that shoots well and makes you happy.Does the same ammo split in your rifle? Hey
Thanks for the info

wow JB you gave me one more thing to worry about HAHA  I shoot factory so I dont worry about double loads
The gun is a Taurus 941 22mag with a 2in barrel

The really good news the accuracy is much more than I expected
The bad news the trigger is really heavy its no so bad for me but the Lovely Ms Peggy can bearly pull   it to cock it

But I must say I do like it quite a bit

Several years ago I was shooting factory Federal .32 H&R Mag through a pistol I no longer own.  Nearly half a box of the cases split.  I contacted Federal and was told that the cases had not been annealed properly.  (I shot more than I wanted to so I could ensure that the cases were not all splitting in the same chamber.

keep em talkin' while I reload
