Black powder loads for modern rifle cartridges like .270 Win?
« on: December 24, 2011, 01:36:23 PM »
I hand load for my .270 bolt action rifle using modern smoke less powders, and am also a long time black powder muzzle loader and cap and ball revolver enthusiast.  Has anyone loaded pyrodex or black powder in a modern rifle cartridge like a .270 or a 30-06?

If so, what loads did you use and how was the full metal jacketed bullet affecting things?

Loads are easy. Fill 'er up and seat a bullet. Does it work? Yes, after a fashion. You need to wipe the bore after every shot for any real accuracy since there isn't any lube. Velocity isn't very high. But it will get a bullet downrange, and if you didn't have anything but black powder available you could use your rifle.

I believe in my limited smarts on BP that it is only 50 % efficient. Filling up a case will not endanger your rifle by pressure
I've used Triple 7 that way in the 30-06 shooting cast only.

I'd be interested in hearing about any velocity data you can get from such cartridges.

My understanding is that the velocity gains by going with a high case to bore volume ratio are not that great with BP.  But I've never really seen hard data - and it wouldn't be the first "myth" about BP that was proven false (if it indeed proves false).

Typically though I've never seen BP velocities go beyond 2200 fps.

RE: jacketed bullets and Black Powder.

A few years ago, Kirk, B. owner of Shiloh Sharps, authored a thread on the Shiloh Sharps forum about this. Bottom Line: a shooter ruined a Shiloh Sharps barrel from doing this.

During the re-barreling process, the barrel was band sawed in half length wise. It was deeply pitted. From what Kirk said he found that the copper fouling covered the BP, which allowed the BP fouling to do it nefarious work on the steel. Seems that the copper fouling easily built up on the BP fouling and vice-versa. From what Kirk posted, a Shooter would need to take time to clean the bore of both the copper and the BP fouling and then periodically check it to make sure it all had been removed.
