6.5 JDJ vs. 6.5 x 30 AI
« on: December 25, 2011, 10:59:07 AM »
Merry Christmas all! I am considering a Contender barrel in either the 6.5 JDJ or someones version of the 6.5 x 30 AI..I know the .225 Winchester brass is very stout...and 30-30 brass is cheap and available everywhere.  It appears by the limited data(far more data available for the 6.5 JDJ)  I can find that the same weight bullets can be run alittle faster from the 6.5 x 30 AI. I have a 7-30 Waters and it appears the 6.5 x 30 AI is more or less a necked down 7-30 Waters..Could fireform 30-30s and then neck down to 6.5.  any and all thoughts appreciated.

Only one I can speak of is the JDJ. It's super accurate. From the 14" tube you can figure 2400 fps with a 120 ballistic tip. With a 20" barrel, the same load is just shy of 2600 fps. Very little recoil and brass life is good.

I don't have any 6.5s but do have a 6mm-225 and a 30-30AI and the case life of both is really good. The 30-30AI does not grow. I have shot some cases 7 or 8 times and they NEVER need trimming. The 30-30 case AI in 6.5 would hold more powder but it might be a trade off of less efficiency over the 225 case in a pistol barrel. If the barrel length can't burn all the powder then it is a wast and you get a BIG FIRE BALL AND MUZZLE BLAST BOOM.

A little more speed doesn't equate to as much as case efficiency does in a handgun, and the 6.5JDJ is very efficient in short tubes.   I think you'll also find that the 225 brass will last much longer than 30-30 brass.

Fred would have all the data you'd ever want on the 6.5X30-30's as he chambers 6.5 Bullberry, 6.5 Bullberry Imp and 6.5 Bullberry Imp Match.

The down side of the JDJ is dies and brass may be more initial cost, but they are both readily available.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I was looking really seriously at the 6.5-30-30 at one time but it was the price of the dies that turned me to the 30-30AI. Lee makes a set of 30-30AI dies that has worked perfectly for me. Retail $28.99 at Midway. I really am impressed with my 30-30AI. With 125 Ballistic Tips I get 2670 fps out of a 14" barrel and it just smokes deer.  ;D I got the dies with my 14" 6mm-225 barrel in an estate sale along with the action and a 10" 357 mag and 45/410 barrel in a package deal.

Spinafish, You've already made one good decision(6.5mm) and which ever way you go, you'll make another good decision as well. I've shot a 6.5JDJ for almost 20 years now and it's my all time favorite centerfire bottleneck Contender round, period.  So there is no way I'd reccomend against it.  I've never fired a 6.5 X 30AI but I do shoot a 7 X 30AI and it's pretty high on my favorite list as well.  It has a sharper shoulder, shorter body and longer neck than the 7 X 30 Waters.  Case capacity to the base of the neck is slightly less than the Waters.  This difference is VERY small and completely insignificant as far as I'm concerned.  I've had a couple of Waters barrels and it was my son's "do everything" round for years and performance of the two was for all practical purposes...identical.  The one advantage I'd give the 7 X 30AI is the long neck if you happen to be a cast booolit shooter, which I've just never gotten around to in this caliber....but with the current price of bullets... ::) .  My first thought when I made my first 6.5JDJ brass was "My goodness what a short little neck".  In the 6.5JDJ I've never shot anything but jacketed 120gr or less, and that little neck has never been a problem and Lord knows it sho don't hurt the accuracy.  I've rambled around way too much already, so I'll quit with the thought that if J D Jones makes it...I'd find it mighty hard to beat it 8) .  Enjoy whichever...
Walt :)
