Ammo Testing
« on: December 26, 2011, 01:48:25 AM »
Morning guys!
II have wanted to do this with my H&R for some time. This was with my Marlin Squirrel. I have done also it with my CZ. It really shows how different bullets shoot differently.

OK, here is the setup, this was shot indoors at 25 Yards. I choose 12 different bullets. I fired 5 shot groups on target but fired 10 bullets of each kind total. I also cleaned the barrel between bullet changes. I set the gun up on bags under the receiver and butt so it would sit in-position all by itself.
Out on the range, from a clean barrel, I shot 5 rounds into the back stop. Then settled down and shot 5 for group. Then, I cleaned the barrel. Using two solvent patches, two brush strokes and one dry patch followed with a light oiled patch, then repeat the whole thing with next brand of ammo.

The ammo:
Aguela; "SE", "HYPER" & 60Gr
CCI; "Stinger"
RWS; "Target" & "Subsonic"
PMC; "ScoreMaster",  "Moderator" & "Match Rifle"
Winchester; "Power Point"
Remington; "Golden" & "Cyclone"

In your rifle it looks as though it really likes that lot of Cyclones. What ammo do you usually use in it? Seems the stingers shoot close to the same POA too.

I like your marlin. They came out with that one just after I bought my 880ss. I was wishing I would've waited to buy. Did you put it in the wood stock?
Good shooting anyways, I'd be stocking up on those Rems too.  Crazy how different the ammo can be. My 880 makes shotgun patterns with Fed champion.

Yes I did, Its one of my favorites! That's a special picked, factory walnut 880 stock I fit. It's a early model SQL with the same heavy barrel as the M2000 had. Its even got the dovetails in the barrel where the sights would go. It has a custom trigger and shoots like a house afire!

Good test CW.  It shows what a diff. ammo can make.  Even rimfire.

We all need to do that kind of testing to wring the best out of our guns. Problem is manufacturers change things so fast these days you may not be able to buy your best choice next week, or worse they change something and you don't even know about it.

I don't understand the cleaning routine. Do you really clean your gun that often, that when you go hunting you start with a clean barrel?  I almost never clean a rimfire barrel.

I cleaned it extra for the testing. I do generally speaking keep my barrels clean yes. I am more lax with the rimfires tho... ::)
