454 toy and deer gun
« on: December 26, 2011, 06:44:33 AM »
Well I got around to loading for my 454 Super Redhawk and getting some time shooting paper with it. I bought it because I seem to be collecting 45 caliber handguns lately and figured this might make a pretty good hunting pistol. I burned a hundred 45 colt loads thru it, a 260 gr, WFN at 900 fps. Shot great and a nice target load in the pistol. I looked around in my bullet collection and found a box of 240 gr Hornady XTP bullets, loaded them on top of 22.0 grs. of Imr 4227 and this load also shoots just fine and the big pistol is a pussycat to shoot with this level of power. My old eyes seem to like the long barrel (7 1/2 inches) as I can put a cylinder full under 4 inches at 50 yards. I plan on plugging a doe with it this coming weekend if one offers me a shot inside of 75 yards or so as this is a common distance to shoot at deer on my lease.  Any ideas on a good holster for it?

Just how fast can I push a 275 gr. cast bullet out of 45 Long Colt brass? Hoping for 1200 fps or so. I want to use IMR 4227. This in the 454 so the gun can handle pressure but the brass surely has limitations.

Hodgdon has 300 gr loads in those speeds with your desired powder for the ruger 45 colt loads, can't imagine it would not work for the 275 gr slug.

Hornady lists in their #4 manual with a 300 gr XTP a MAXIMUM load of 21 gr of IMR4227 in Winchester cases and Winchester WLP primers at an OAL of 1.585.
For a 10 inch Contender this load clocked 1200 fps for them.
If your cast seated no deeper I see no problem even in a Blackhawk as they list that load for the Blackhawk too.
I don't worry about the brass.  Unless you just get carried away with PSI you won't have any trouble.

I have been using Uncle Mikes holsters both shoulder and hip with great results. If you do your part the load you listed will do great even out to 75 or more yards. I like to at least estimate 25 yards farther to ensure less mistakes in misreading yards. I use 23.5 gr of H110 Behind  a 300 gr molded Lee bullet not gaschecked and a mag large pistol primer in a Colt Anaconda with great results. This load has accounted for many hogs and deer. I have a friend that has used the same load in his blackhawk 45 for many years. He used Federal brass and now Starline brass. Be careful as to the brass you use make sure it is modern strong brass with these loads in the colt brass. Hope this helps.
