45/70 - Speer 400 gr. "Special Purpose"??
« on: December 27, 2011, 07:01:49 AM »
Has anyone had any experience with this Speer 400 gr'er in the 45/70? Looks like it could be a good one to try out.
Any comments or load work would be appreciated.

Why sure!

It is my favorite 45/70 bullet!  I have shot deer and a bear with them always perfect results.I shoot them at velocities form 1600 up past 2000. I have never recovered a bullet and never had one fail in any way.
I also shoot for bones. That bear was hit at better then 2000 fps at about 20 yards right behind the front leg striking the other side leg bone shattering it on the way out. Down he went.. but he jumped back up moving away fas. I put a second looking for a "texas Heart shot" I broke a right rear leg bone and the bullet exited his left.
On deer it leaves big holes and little blood shot meat at lower velocities. Up at 2000+ its pure devistation,

Overall its a excellent bullet for big game at about any sane velocity.

Glad to hear that, I wanted to get some 405gr Rems for mine and Cabelas was out so it was the Speer, looks the same just about anyway.
