smith and wesson model 617
« on: December 27, 2011, 12:42:12 PM »
I have a little leftover christmas cash so I'm looking at purchasing a model 617 new from a local dealer. Anyone have an opinion of these handguns? I own an older k-22 and it shoots like a dream I  was hopeing for the same acuracy with the 617.  I like the 10 shot capacity, and the stainless, I plan on changing the grips to real wood if I like the handgun enough to make it a regular carry piece around the farm. Could use a little input from a few owners and shooters before I make this purchase.

Some years back I had one of the 6 shot models with an 8 3/8 inch barrel. Very fine handgun. Liked it so much that I bought a 686 with the same length barrel. They looked like twins until you looked at the bore.

Hello Woods
I had a brand new model 617-7 and did not like it. It did not group as tight as my older K-22's did. I used J-B Bore bright in it's bore and it shrank the group some but it still did not shoot as Tight as my Older K-22's. I tried eleven kind's of ammo and it made little difference in it's groups. I sold it and replaced it with another Pre-17 that shoots very small groups...My advice to you is if you like the performance of the older K-22's buy another one of them Rather than a Model 617... I have one in 4". Its the most accurate revolver I own, but a little on the heavy side for me as far as a tote around gun. But for squirle gun it excelent.
As far as woods/general shooter I use the model 63 or the new Ruger 4" sp-101

I have one with a 4" barrel, it's very accurate. It's very close in size and weight to my 686, makes practicing much easier/economical.

617 is a fantastic gun.  I have one in 6 and 4 inch.  The 6 inch carries an EOTECH on it and use it for raccoon and squirrel hunting.  It one of the guns that always comes to the range with me.
