Nikon vs Minox
« on: December 28, 2011, 01:18:24 PM »
I am looking at a scope to make it easier to see the target while developing hand loads for my .260 Remington.

The SWFA ads for the Nikon and Minox appear below:
       Nikon 4-16x42 Monarch Riflescope
Stock # - NIK8421

  • Matte
  • Nikoplex
  • 1"
  • Side Focus
  $439.95

More Details »

Optional Accessories:
Butler

       Minox 3-15x50 ZA5 Riflescope
Stock # - MIN66520

  • Matte
  • Mino-Plex
  • 1"
  • Side Focus
  • Mail-In $50 Rebate
  $568.95

Does anyone have an idea if the Minox is worth the extra $$$?  I do not know of anyone who uses one, nor have I seen one in the flesh.
Any help will be most appreciated.  Thanks,  Rol

Dont have any experience with minox scopes but do have a pair of minox binoculars. I also have a set of nikon monarchs and the monarchs seem to be every bit as good as my minox set and cost about half what the minox set me back.

Don't know if Cameraland is still running their holiday special but, they had an open box Minox 3-15 for $299.  I bought one for the same purpose.  I don't normally use high power optics so.....the eye relief at 15 seemed to be lacking a bit otherwise it is working great.

I just bought 2 of the ZA 4-20x50 W/BDC Minox scopes. They arrived yesterday and seem like a real nice scope. It may be a while before I get them mounted and see how I like them from the bench/field though. The open box special was 399. each. I'm sure I did OK :)

That makes two of us; I bought one of those same specials. Was gonna try one then order another, but somebody had already bought the last ones  ;) . Haven't mounted mine yet either, but looks awfully nice so far: Schott glass is great at all powers, good eye relief, 1/8" target turrets, fairly light weight and bulk; would have preferred a 44mm objective, but by being side-focus I have more leeway with base/ring combos than a huge AO 50. The fact Minoxes are assembled in America is a big plus, too. There were some QC issues with Minox initially, but they seem to be fixed, plus they've gone to a lifetime warranty since. Incidentally, I bought it to replace a 5-20X Nikon Monarch on my "best" varmint rifle, and that'll be the case. Frankly, the Monarch glass is not up to par for scopes in its price range, e.g.: a Sightron Big Sky is optically superior.
