19-3 Shooter in a pawn shop.
$400---I can't seem to get interested in the M19.

Why should I convince you? If you don't recognize the value of one of the very best S&W ever made then leave it for someone who does appreciate them. I've owned a bunch of M19s over the years and regret letting each one go. My first ever .357 Magnum was a 6" M19 and with it I won my first ever trophy in competition.

These days I've gone to the M66 stainless version as I prefer SS over blued guns.

I have a 4" 19-3 I bought new in '76 or '77. I've bought / sold / traded guns over the years but the M19 will be the last to go. It's still my favorite "walk in the woods" gun.

Whatever you do, DON'T buy that 19!

If you do, you'll realize how silly an N-frame 357 is!

Of all the 357's I've played with, the old 19 just seems to be "perfect". Smooth as glass, and exactly the right weight and balance. It's what a 357 is supposed to be!

If you get it, it will ruin you to all other 357's.

My Model 19-3 in 4" has been out of service for about 25 yrs. now.

Back in the mid 80's I had it converted to a PPC gun with a Bill Davis ( AristOcrat ) custom barrel. The gun was done by a great gunsmith in our area Walt Cabell. It was super accurate and won me many a championship in the civilian class. Even one state championship one year.

I just didn't have the time to keep up all the shoots, traveling around the state, reloading and some practice. Working 8 &12 hr shifts, coaching little league, trying to be a father to 4 kids and wife time too. So I stopped shooting PPC. It was fun while it lasted.

The Model 19 has been hanging in my gun safe ever since. Once and awhile I'd take it out and shoot a few 38 wadcutters through it at 25 & 50yrds. Just to remember the good old days. It's still a shooter.

I saved the old 4" barrel and now am thinking of putting it back together as another handy carry gun. With the target hammer & target trigger it has one super smooth action.

Walt Cabell pasted away a couple of years ago so I'll have to find another good gunsmith to change it back and make it the shooter it used to be. I still have the original Bianchi crossdraw holster for it. My Colt "357" in 4" may have to share this holster with his Model 19 buddy again.

I have mixed emotions about the 19. I like shooting the M28 or even the M586 better over the long term. I like the weight of the M19 and the larger handle but the shooting is another thing. It is not unplesant it is the weight. I seem steadier & more accurate with the heavier weight.
It certainly--the M19--is not unplesant as the J frames I own. The stock size is very important to me in this equasion.

DAGITDANGITDANGIT---Just dang it is all I have to say.
My daughter came by this morning as usual to bring Jack, my grandson that I am spoiling as best I can, and she asked me if and when we were going shooting again. I may have to break down and do it on a Saturday--Lord i hate the Saturday crowds at my range---good guys but just a bunch of em and waiting for an opening is not my idea of fun.
I digress---MOM was out tending to jacks diaper when the subject came up--then she asked I f I had anything new. i went and got the M19 and she grabs it. I think i am going to have to find another 19.

Dang it all she wants em all and doesn't want to wait til I die.

In my humble opinion the M19 is a carry gun. I agree it's a good walk in the woods gun, but it was my walk in the gehetto gun for a lot of years and a lot of gehettos. I'm like Greybeard in that my M19's have morphed into 66's, but I consider it the same gun, just a different color mostly. CH

You bet, that's what they are best at. I was able to buy mine when we switched to semi-autos. My 4" M19 has an easy life now and just goes to the range or for a walk. Add a heavier frame 6" and a 3" J frame and you are covered. I've got the 3" M60 .357, time to find a M28. I like stainless in the carry all the time gun, blue is fine for me in the field.

I am waithing patiently for Rudy to get my shoulder rig to me---Black Hills in Laredo.
I am going to wear that withe M28 for the rest of the winter and if it goes well I may get some different holsters for the beast.

Bought a new 4" 19 in the 70's. Shot magnums in all the time. Finally, the bore wore out. Sent it back to Smith, had them install a 6" barrel, target hammer, target trigger. Shot it and shot it and shot it. Never could understand why Smith gave up on the 19 for the heavier frame gun.

For shooting I like/love heavy guns---I shoot them better.
Little guns are good---they stay inside and are not for walking or carrying.

My mother-in-law went through the training and got her carry permit when she was 70 years old. Her instructor convinced her that the only handgun worth having was a S&W revolver. She wound up buying a 2.5" 19. She never fired it. She's gone, but her old 19 is one of my favorite guns of all time. Qualified with it once shooting left handed. It's just like pointing your finger. However, I still want a 3" 13 to go with my 3" 66. I love my N frames, but if I have to carry something all day long, it's gonna usually be a K frame.

My 6" model 19 was stolen by a young soldier that came over to visit me when he was home on leave last year. i loved that gun, dont think I will ever see it again he is sationed in Kentucky,

I just looked at a M-19-3, 2-1/2" that had a little holster wear at the muzzle, appeared to not have been shot a lot... $399.99. I think i could get a little shaved off that, but that sounded like a pretty good deal to me.

No i didn't, as i already have a couple of 19's, one in 357mag., and the other in 44spl... I did try to get him down a little on the price but someone else came along and bought it for the $399.00.
