rebarrel

are tikka actions good for rebarreling. say from a 300 win mag to a 240 or 257 weatherby or is the savage or remington action  a better one and easier to do.

I had a T3 re-barreled from .243 to .257 Roberts but cannot speak to the Magnum actions.  Keep in mind the barrel threads are metric and some gunsmiths may balk at having to set up for metric threads.

I would say it depends on what you are looking for in terms of results. The smith I use works with them and says they have been true. However, he had to check and it takes just as much time and skill (and therefore $) to set the action up and check for squareness of threads, bolt face, etc as it does to cut it true once it set up. So certain production gun actions may have a reputation for nice dimensions and workmanship, but it is not a good idea to have a $300-400 barrel installed on any action that hasn't been verified (i.e., trued before). Of course this doesn't apply to custom actions such as barnard, RPA, stolle, etc. I have owned 2 T3s and I will say that the action of the bolt is so smooth that I would not hesitate to have one rebarreled. You tend to really grow accustomed to them! As I recall the 300WM came with an 11" twist and the mag length kept you from seating close to the lands. Why not sell yours and get a T3 in 7mmRM? A 175 partition at 2950fps would be great for everything, plus there is extra room for seating depth! I believe there is only one action length for the T3.

I would go Savage action.  You can re-barrel it yourself and cheaper.

T3s ain't metric. They are 1"-16, no problem to install a new barrel. I did two of them last Friday, they're super easy since they are flat faced on the back.

What you want to do wouldn't be a big deal at all since your magazine and bolt will work fine for all the cartridges you mentioned.

Here is a good thread on the subject of the barrel threads. Nobade is right, but one would at first think otherwise since the guard screws are metric:

the reason why i asked about rebarreling is that  my tikka LFT handed 300 win mag weighs 6.4 pounds and a savage and remington weighs 7.3 and 7.5.  if i only have to rebarrel my tikka for 257 weatherby it would weigh about 6.6 or so with a 26 inch barrel.   thats about a pound less than the others.  i have a vanguard moa in 257 weatherby and it weighs 7.5 lb without scope also. one pound is a lot for me.

The T3 is a serious, lightweight, accurate hunting tool. The absolute best I could find for the value. It's hard to go back to anything else once you have handled, worked the bolt, shot and hunted with one. Bravo to the engineers at Sako/Tikka.
