''NEW'' 7-08?
« on: December 30, 2011, 04:04:01 AM »
I was checking out the ''new'' 7-08-and realised it really wasn't much[if any]diferent than my 100 year old swede 6.5x55 that is quite possably the most efficient deer cartridge ever chambered.High sectional density, moderate velocity, low recoil and way more accurate then I am capable of .Nor is it  fussy about what you feed it-hold it straight and the deer drops.Since I already have three 65x55 swedes,I really can;t justify getting another rifle-and I already have a nice 30/30 topper with the 20 guage barrel[we can't get extra barrels in Canada-can't ship across the border, got to fight terrorism you know, and besides-single shot rifles present a SERIOUS THREAT  to National Security]but I'd like to get one of those new ambidextous thumbhole stock handi rifles in 7-08-because I already KNOW how its going to work....just like  its 65x55 swede or 7x57 mauser brothers have  for several generations before it...as King Soloman said-there's ''nothing new under the sun''

the 45-70 is the most efficient DEER cartridge?-nope-the 7-08,6.5x55 or 7x57 wins hands down-but if you are talking MOOSE-then yes,the 45-70 would be my choice-for shots under 100 yards[pretty typical ranges for moose]

one can compare "sectional density" of the 7/08 to tha DTAI of tha 45/70......
when ya get old & wore slap out, it ain't no fun crawling roun on ya hands and knees
blood trail'n in tha swamp from that lil projectile even when tha most excellent shot placement has been made. all tha specs from any caliber were taken from a "test" barrel
and variations do take place.
oh-yeah !!! let me give yall tha definition of DTAI..............

Distance Traveled After Impact 8) and tha 45/70 wins hands down in my book.

but tha 7/08 does hava place in my vault. matter fact i got bout 3 different kinds  ;)

I have killed over 30 blacktails and 2 black bears with my 6.5x55 swede.About half of the blacktails dropped in their tracks, the others went a maximum of 20 yards-all one shot kills. Both blackbears were hit broadside on the shoulder, and never took two steps. The 6.5X55 needs no introduction-nor does the 7x57 and the 7-08 shouldn't be any diferent.
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the 45-70 first introduced for hunting buffalo? It would definately be my choice for moose-but not deer.

well, as my dad told me when I was a kid [a long time ago]and asked him if a certain[forget which] rifle could kill a deer-''sure-if you hold it straight.''...
I don't have a 45-70-but I do have several 9,3x57's-loaded with 286 gr PriviPartizans-hits like the hammer of Thor.No arguement from me on the effectiveness of heavy bullets[or anything it hits]

According to the post  HANDI SUCCESS STORIES  the 45-70 wins in this group.
I'm thrilled about my new 7-08 but it finished pretty low on the list and not a 6.55x55 to be seen.

''NOT A 6.5X55 to be seen''-course-not H&R doesn't chamber it....unfortionately,the US doesn't take kindly to metric denominations, but the deer don't seem to be immune.I suggest, however that the 7-08 is pretty close to ideal for deer sized game-right out to 300 yards. But for moose under 150 yards-I would definately pick the heavier 45-70.My beef is we can't avail ourselves of the barrel program in Canada-I'd have BOTH

I don't have any thing against the 6.5x55.  I have heard nothing but good things about that round.  Yes I know H&R does not make this round.  I bet if we asked all the guys that took animals this year with the 45-70 most would tell you that it is not their only Handi.  My new 7-08 shoots very good and have no doubt it would be great on deer.  Easy on the wallet when it comes to brass, bullets and powder.  It would not suprise me to hear some one has made a 6.5x55 in this group.  I also really like the 45-70 for just about any form of large game hunting.  I just don't have one in a handi yet

I have not fired a 7-08-but from the ballistics,I doubt very much there would be any appreciable diference betyween the 7x57,or 6.5x55-which was my original assumption .Low recoil, accurate and very effective on game.Lots of guys have gone to the ''super magnums''-but I have doubts about MOST peoples ability to shoot well with them. Most people shoot moderate recoil rifles better than rifles with heavy recoil.
I do admit my preference/prejudice for the 6.5x55-mainly because I've killed so many deer with it.But I think I would have the same opinion if I had been using  a 7x57-or a 7-08.Another factor is the flat trajectory-while 90% of my deer shoots are well withing 100yards-the odd time I will see one across a logging slash-and with the rifle sighted in  a couple of inches high at 100 yards-I'm good to go at longer ranges-if I get a good rest.
Moose hunting is on the river or on overgrown logging roads-50 yards is typical-and the bonus of using a heavier bullet like a 45-70-or my 93x57,is where moose are-so are grizzlies-and here in BC,they are certainly NOT an endangered species as some our our southern anti-hunter types would have you believe. The best ''life insurance'' policy you can get with the possabilty of a grizzly coming in is a rifle with ''thump''....

There's no real good reason why H&R can't offer a 6.5mm barrel, Rem makes the 260 Remington, so they have the tooling to do both.  :-\ I had a 6.5x55 stubbed barrel, sold it after I had a 243 barrel rebored for a 260 Rem, it shoots real good.  ;) Same can be said for a .338" barrel, Marlin makes the 338MX.  ::)

Not sure I understand the Justify part. The only Justification would be if you want one. Though you may find negligible cartridges differences between the two, BC , SD , and light recoil etc.. Why not look at different rifle setups.

I do own a 7-08. It's positioned as my short action lightweight, steep terrain whitetail rig. It's a superb short action.
If I were to want a 6.5x55 caliber , I would just seek a different style setup for interest.  Perhaps a Ruger, or Remmy Mannlicher or Swedish Mauser.

''justify''?-with a dozen .22's and a dozen more rifles in my two gun cabinets,I've run out of room for one more-thats where the ''justifying'' comes in...my dear wife of 39 years says she is going to hold a gun auction at my funeral, sell them to the highest bidder right on the closed coffin-which could come sooner than I think if I buy one  more without selling some...[she hates to be misunderstood....not that its likely to happen....

I started filling up a second gun safe and told two buddies to come get their guns out of my safe.  I have plans to get a few more this year.  After a cartridge for small game/varmint, one for large game and a very large/ dangerous game, there is no justifying another gun in my opinion.  This is a hobby for me and as long as the budget can afford it I will be looking for more.  Straight wall cartridge in single shot actions are on my shopping list.

All of our wives should get together and start an auction site.  Some thing like Dead Collectors R US

I'm married to one of those "pesky red folks".  She's 6 months younger than  I am.  She still shoots, throws a knife and hawk, shoots a long bow and WILL lift your scalp ifn ya tick her off.  "Yes dear" is a very effective strategy around here.  It took me 50 years of my life to find her, and Patty is a keeper.  She's a Ponca.  One time she and a friend of ours won 1200 from another tribe.  They went out and bought an 18 ft. teepee.  What else would you do?
