30-30 Loads Needed

I have a good selection of 30cal bullets and powder for the 30-30. I would like any recommendations for any of the following combinations. I'm shooting a H&R Handi rifle with SB2 frame.


Bullets:

125gr Nosler Ballistic Tip

130gr Hornady SP
150gr Sierra GK

I shoot 180 gr cast bullets and 30 gr of 3031. 30 gr of 3031 also works pretty good to shoot 150 gr jacketed bullets. I wonder if there is a relationship between all the numbers. 30-30, 30 gr,  3031.  Easy to remember anyhow.

Hey Dinny!
I use H-335 for my 30-30 almost exclusively.  I even use it on my short 14 inch barrels for my T/C. 

I believe I use 35.0 grains under the 125 to 130 grainers and 33.0 under the 150's.  I'll have to go home and check that out.  From my T/C rifles, I get about 1.5 to 2.0" at 100 yards.  With the pistols I get nearly the same...maybe 1/2 inch bigger.  I don't shoot three round strings when I test loads, I usually do 5 or 10 rounds to see if there are any deviations. 

While I know these can be made to be better, I like H-335 over something like IMR-4198 (which gives great groups) because it meters very well when loading.

as I have posted elsewhere (when speaking of a different caliber) 3031 is my go to powder for this caliber and the other one I mentioned.  I do not remember and cannot find the records of the exact load I used but 3031 with the Sierra 125 grain FNHP was what I settled on for use in a first run Marlin 30/30.  This was the first rifle I reloaded for, and can honestly say it has a different personality with lighter bullets.  Since you are looking at a single shot and do not have a need for the blunt tipped projectiles try a 130 grain spire point while you are at it. 


The 165-168 grain boat tailed bullets are used in the .308 for 1,000 meter target shooting so that may well be worth persuing as well.

Dinny,
As far as I am conserned, WW748 for the jacketed. NOTHING ELSE needed!!!
 
I have been shooting the same 748 load since the late 70's! I prefer the 170g Hornady bullet, mostly for centimental reasons, but find it a little sporter then the Sierra. But either will do just fine.
 
I done shoot many lead from CF rifles, if I did, I would start with 3010 powder.

WW-748 for the 150 grain and above bullets. For the lightweights, Reloader 7 gets great veleocity with the least powder and recoil.

150 grain Sierra -  36.5 grains WIN 748  - muzzle velocity 2,245 fps from 20 inch barrel.

My 125 gr load for my rifle is 37.5 gr of WW748, I use it in both the handi and a 14" contender barrel. It is the most accurate in my guns, right @ moa. Its performs like dynamite on deer, it does hold together and exit though, I have not recovered any from the carcass' . I do not even use 150 or heavier bullets anymore, I just watch for a sale on bulk 125 Rem or Win PSP's and buy 500 or more at a time., that way I only have to buy every 2-3 years.

Ive been using H322 and 150 gr bullets lately and they are the most accurate loads ive tested so far in my 30-30. Havent tried gamekings yet. Speer & Sierra flat points mostly.

30gr Reloader 7
125 gr Sierra SP and HP
Rem 9 1/2 primers

edit: Just noticed this is identical to an MD Smith 30-30 load.

Dinny 10 grains of Unique with 170 gr cast bullets is a sweet load cheap to shoot, low report, mild recoil, accurate, and a fun load to shoot.
I have used this load both with and without fillers works well either way. Makes a great plinking load ,even the kids love it. It also powerful enough for deer at ranges under 100 yards.

I used to load 125g Remington psp's and H335 for a velosity of about 2650, for my single shot. That was a great all round shooter.

I just replaced my stock with a synthetic so loaded up some loads to try out on my Handi. Anyway it was amazing because the first shot at 25 yds. with the synthetic stock  was dead center. I proceded to shoot up some loads which didn't group all that great before I tried one that put the two bullet holes almost touching(less than 1/16 of an inch apart) at 100 yards. I had shot 28 rounds before I fired  those last 2 shots so the barrel was very dirty & the wind was 10-15 mph.

I only shot that load with those 2 bullets as I had an appointment I had to make & didn't want to be late. Needless to say I will be loading more of them but will also try my new Collett die set that I just received to see what it does to that load.   

The load that I loaded on those two bullets is 33.5 grains of RL15, CCI 200 LR primer and 150 gr. Midway softpoint bullets.

i am not hunting now,so most of my shooting is at the range punching holes in paper. The load i use for that is 30 grs imr 4895, WLR primer, and Hornady 150 gr RN jacketed bullet. Easy on the shoulder and that bullet wants to go in the same hole.....Mike

With my Sav. 170B pump gun I mainly shoot two loads.  30 grs. H335 with the Lee 309-170 gr. GC FP ranched dipped in Alox/JPW lube and sized to .310,MV 2133 fps. 

My other load is 8.0 grs. Alliant Red Dot same bullet shot as cast no gas check two light coats of Lee Alox/JPW lube MV 1230 fps.  Both loads will shoot as accurate as you can hold the sights on target.
